A New Campaign Goal, The Largest Gift
November 1980

The goal of the five-year Campaign for Dartmouth has been raised by $25 million to $185 million. The increase, announced by the trustees on November 7, just as this issue went to press, is aimed to offset the impact of inflation on the Dartmouth endowment. The trustees also cited the campaign's success through three years as favorably influencing their decision to revise the goal. On November 1, which marked the third anniversary of the campaign, gifts and pledges amounted to $128 million.

With the announcement of the revised goal came news of a $10-million gift from Robert E. Maxwell '23, the largest ever received by Dartmouth, and a gift of $1.55 million from Mr. and Mrs. Kelvin Smith '20. Maxwell, a retired investment counselor, lives in Winona, Minnesota. Smith is former president and chairman of Lubrizol Corporation, and he and his wife live in Cleveland.
