As promised last month, I will now relate the tale of perhaps the northernmost wedding in the history of the class of '77. Word of the event arrived from free-lance writer. Pita Jelley Benz '76. According to her note, the echoes truly rang for Dartmouth as loyal alums masquerading as the White Mountain choir serenaded the residents of Dawson City, Yukon Territory, dur- ing the celebration following the July 4 wedding of Gary Clohan to Dawson City schoolteacher, Chris Olsen. It seems that Gary, hereafter known as "Klondike Clo," had gone searching for adventure and had fallen in love with Chris during Dawson's annual outhouse race, held Labor Day weekend. The matchmaker who arranged for Chris and Gary to race with the same outhouse was Gerry Carlson '7B. (Who cares if the story is true, it's still a good one.) To ' help Gary through his prenuptial-jitters, a 200- mile canoe trip down the Stewart and Yukon rivers was planned. Dartmouth alums from Maine to Anchorage and representing classes from '75 to 'BO were on hand, including Bruce York '76, Kim Rosenau York, Rick Clark '76, Larry Benz '75, Pita Jelley Benz '76, RockyGeyer, Steve Thompson '7B, and Steve Murphy 'BO. Charlie Roots '7B caught up with the group in Dawson City. Five canoes and a kayak formed the Yukon's only floating bar and cigar store. Dawson may never be the same!
I also received a press clipping which, while it did not mention canoes, did announce the marriage of Vince Pellegrini to Lisa Giosa in June. They are currently living in Rochester, N.Y., where Vince has been an orthopedic resi- dent at Strong Memorial Hospital since graduat- ing from Dartmouth Medical School and com- pleting a surgical residency at Hartford Hospital.
August 29 was the date of the marriage of Evy Chan and Mark Nelson, and the White Church in Hanover was the location. While Mark is a Yale graduate, he has a bit of "green" in his blood, as his grandfather is Chauncey Allen '24, professor emeritus of psychology, who administers all G.R.E.'s, law boards, etc. at Dartmouth.
Thomas Mayer wrote that he has survived Harvard Law School and the Harvard Law Review and has moved to the Big Apple to clerk in 1981-82 for Judge Lumbard of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The New York bar examiners willing, he hopes to join the thriving community of New York City Dartmouth lawyers, including Richard Mark, who will be joining Donovan, Leisure. KevinRover has already spent a year as a real lawyer at Morrison, Pohl & Bailey.
Dave Wood (who signed his note "S. Bear") writes that he is now in Seattle, cleaning up oil spills for the Coast Guard. He notes that the Northwest is so careful with its pristine waters that he seems to get polluted more often than the lakes, bays, and sounds.
Anne Thomas Donaghy and her husband John '75 are teaching English at Kimball Union Academy. A daughter, Mary Taylor Donaghy, was born June 16, 1980.
Sharon Dombkowski Beck gave birth to her second child, Stefan Andrew, in November 1980. She and her husband, J. Robert '75, have been living in Boston with their two sons while Bob does a one-year fellowship at Tufts New England Medical Center.
Max Anderson is back in the U.S. after having visited over 100 museums everywhere from Turkey to England and Tunisia to Sweden. He then finished his dissertation and received a Ph.D. in classical art and archaeology from Harvard. He is now in New York City, where he works as one of three curators in the Metropolitan Museum's department of Greek and Roman art. He asked that I put out an A.P.B. for Mark Ruben.
In the awards department, I noted in recent correspondence from the College that Betsy Fauver has been elected a member-at-large to represent Region I (New England) on the Alumni Council. I also received word that Gary Crone has been selected as one of the "Outstanding Young Men of America." This program is endorsed by the United States Jaycees and recognizes the achievements and abilities of men between the ages of 21 and 36. Nominations for the honor are received from senators, representatives, governors, mayors, state legislators, university and college presidents, and deans, as well as various civic groups. The criteria for selection include a candidate's voluntary service to community, professional leadership, academic achievement, business advancement, cultural accomplishments, and civic and political participation. Congratulations to Gary for receiving this outstanding award.
I will have been in New England in October to attend the wedding of Jim Lloyd and a grade-school friend of mine from Kansas City (it's a small world). While Garth and I were looking forward to the event, we were berserk with rage to learn that Jim had scheduled the wedding for the day of the Harvard-Dartmouth game. I hope there will have been enough other '77s in attendance to cheer the Big Green on.
Watch your mail for a survey relating to our upcoming reunion June 18-20, 1982.
