Those involved in public service rank at the top of our class. We salute Al Ertel, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor in Pennsylvania, and Carl McCall, who is running for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in New York.
U.S. Representative Ertel, who has a Tuck/ Thayer degree from Dartmouth and a law degree from Yale, ran a few years ago against a supposedly invincible incumbent and won. He has been reelected several times. The race for governor offers him an opportunity to speak out on the tremendous economic problems facing the Keystone State.
Carl McCall has a distinguished public service record including stints as a New York State Senator and as an alternate representative to the United Nations. The New York Times reports that Carl's supporters include both black leaders and the new Democratic Coalition, an issueoriented group. Mayor Koch and Carl would certainly make an interesting team.
In another area vital to the public good, Tom Jackson was confirmed on July 8 as a United States District Court Judge for the Washington, D.C., area. His courtroom is next to the one where John Hinckley was just tried.
In an equally important event, Judge Jackson also married Carolyn Gardiner last February. They will live in the Washington area, although I am sure that Tom will be sneakreading briefs on the deck of his sailboat on the Chesapeake.
Turning to class concerns, salutes to everyone who turned the trick and put $160,058 in the College account for 1982. A total of 495 '58s stepped up to the mark. The work done by Walt Vail, together with Chuck Neff and Don Voss, coupled with all of the fine regional and class agents, produced this result. Particular thanks to Walt, who is the nicest armtwister ever.
The look on Tom Green's face in the picture below is best left undescribed. If he can be believed, he was attending a Jordan Marsh Italian Festival when other prominent Italians just naturally showed up. Tom is senior vice president for sales promotion of Jordan Marsh, Florida, his employer for 20 years. Tom's wife Carol, not pictured here, is active in community work. Their son is a growing six-foot-oneincher and at 16 is already thinking about Dartmouth '88. Tom had lunch in Los Angeles recently with Beverly Hills attorney Chuck Hurewitz and his wife Rene. He missed seeing Don Shagrin, who was on a safari in Africa. Thanks for the nice note, Tom.
Mark Harty, class secretary for '73, wrote a fine letter about Will Durousseau. Will graduated from Howard Medical School and is an OB/GYN in Los Angeles, Calif., as well as an adjunct professor of medicine at U.S.C. From 1971 to 1973 Dartmouth sent six Tucker Foundation interns each semester to the Compton, Calif., area (bordering Watts) to teach school and become involved in the community. Mark Harty was such an intern. He and all the other interns were sought out by Dr. Durousseau, befriended, and watched over. Will dropped by two or three times each week, "making sure that we had plenty to eat and drink!"
Will also invited students to his home, took them on weekend horseback riding or skiing trips, and he "never let us pay for anything." This generous, concerned friendship was extended to all the interns until the program was discontinued. Did Will have an impact? Mark describes him as one of the "unsung heroes" of Dartmouth, a man who had a positive influence on everyone he met. Mark concluded by saying that Will, who has three daughters, is now studying law, so maybe there will be more to this tale.
John Graf is devoting much time and energy to preparing for our 25th reunion. One thing we can all do to help John is to return all questionnaires and written requests promptly. John is chairing the Derryfield School Board and is heading a $750,000 fund raising campaign for that school. Bill Hartley will have a superb yearbook for the reunion if we do our part by sending in the materials he needs.
My address appears above. If you can't drop in, send news.
Tom Green '58 looks delighted at the chance to pose for a picture with a certain well-knownItalian who put in an appearance at a Jordan Marsh Italian Festival. The '58 class notescolumn elaborates on the occasion.
