It's that familiar time of year again when knocks on doors and telephone calls usher in the art of friendly persuasion to part alumni from their pocketbooks. You've guessed — it's Alumni Fund time! Dick McDonough, our head agent, is busier than a one-armed paperhanger in a high wind. He would certainly appreciate your help in one or all of several ways: First, you could volunteer to be an assistant class agent. Second, you could mail your check in response to the first solicitation; this in itself will save everyone much time, follow-up effort, and general aggravation. Third, you could join that army which sets the telephones buzzing towards the end of the campaign to corral wayward classmates.

Last year class participation was 59 per cent. Our goal in 1982 is 65 per cent. It is interesting to note that if everyone who gave occasionally gave every year, our participation would be over 80 per cent! (The class of '53 had 88 per cent participation last year!) In my mind, there can be all sorts of reasons why we might not be able to contribute basketloads, but it is difficult for me to understand why we cannot all give something. Let's all make Dick McDonough's job that much easier by helping out.

Bill Randall dropped me a line to say that he and Wendy were in Chicago for a weekend early in March to celebrate one of those milestone birthdays (Wendy's). Notwithstanding their efforts, we were unable to make contact, so regrettably I missed them. Bill and Wendy live in Milwaukee. Presumably, they chose Chicago because it is farther south and warmer here.

Reed College recently announced the election of Dick Bressler to its board of trustees. Dick is c.e.o. of Burlington Northern, whose headquarters recently moved to Seattle.

I heard a rumor that Bill Montgomery had gotten married in San Francisco. Send in the confirmation, Bill, when you have a moment.

Dave Edson has recently been appointed executive director of the Dartmouth Educational Loan Corporation. This could be fortuitous for any of you who have kids in or headed for Dartmouth and who are squeezed by the new federal clamp-down on student loans. Good, old, friendly Dave!

Signode and Tom Schanck have figured prominently in the news lately with Signode's plan to go private. If you saw this in the news, you also read that Victor Posner controlled some of Signode's stock. It looks as though Tom is going to be a busy man. In fact he already is, with directorships in the Economic Club of Chicago, the Illinois Manufacturers Association, the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry, Maytag, Amsted Industries, and the American National Bank. He is also a trustee of George Williams College, in which Tom Rowe '50 is active and of which Dave McLaughlin '54 is a past trustee. Tom has Barbara learning all about computers when she is not engaged in activities with the Chicago Symphony. Bill (17) and Becky (15) are in high school. Karl, who is 19, is at George Williams College.

A memorial fund for David Neiditz is beint established with the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving. Contributions can be sent to the foundation office at 45 South Main Street West Hartford, Conn. 06107.

Alden Fiertz pointed out my error in referring to him as "Whitey," since this nickname is the exclusive domain ofElihu Fier. (What you can forget over 30 years!) I appreciate the correction. Aid explained that his not being in Geneva when I phoned him had to do with his splitting his time between Geneva and New York. Last summer he was elected executivevice president and c.0.0. of the Republic National Bank of New York while continuing in a similar position with the Trade Development Bank in Geneva. Alden reported having seen Bill Kay at the Swissair lounge at Kennedy Airport. Apparently, Bill has left the Sun Company and has gone out on his own. Aid also occasionally bumps into Phil Beakman '53 along the East River jogging paths. Phil is, I believe, president and chief operating officer of Seagram.

I hope spring will have sprung by the time this goes into print. Thus far in this neck of the woods, spring has been a little raw around the edges. It's time to kick the tires on the bike and grease up the roller skates.

Football weekends last fall seem like a long time ago, but this reminder of one just surfaced recently.Celebrating victory over Cornell were Fred Carleton '53, Chuck Luker '53, Ilsa huker, GerryGrady '53, Edie Blum, and Sue Grady. The picture camefrom the' 53 secretary. Dick Blum, so hewas presumably there but behind the lens.
