Steve Faber came to Dartmouth from St. Cloud, Minnesota, as a highly touted football player. At St. Cloud Cathedral High School, where he was valedictorian of his graduating class, Faber earned three letters in football and three letters on the basketball team, which he captained. Faber became a leading receiver on the freshman football team. "He is going to play a lot of football while here at Dartmouth," freshman football coach John Curtis said in an October 1978 release sent to Faber's hometown newspaper. Faber. however, was not destined to play a lot of football at Dartmouth. He was injured during his sophomore year and required knee surgery. The operation ended his football career.
During the winter of his junior year, Faber went out for crew and practiced for six weeks. "The first time he was in a boat was March 10 last year," said crew coach Pete Gardner. "He made the varsity by the first of May. He made just phenomenal progress. I've never had anyone make the varsity before after one spring of rowing. Faber rows at number six for the heavyweights. He now has his sights set on international rowing and will try out for the U.S. Team. Captain Steve Burger and Peter Saltsman, both seniors, and junior Will Hastings are also heavyweights trying out for the U.S. Team. "The four are pretty much on par now," said Gardner. "Of course, we don't know what the competition will be. If Faber continues to improve like that he'll really be outstanding' Everything he has done he has excelled at."
