For the first time in three years the Dartmouth hockey team did not compete in the E.C.A.C. and N.C.A.A. championships. "It was frustrating in a lot of ways," said coach George Crowe of the season. The Green was 10-16 overall and had marks of 8-14 in the E.C.A.C. and 6-4 in the Ivy League. Dartmouth had won two straight Ivy titles and had finished third in the N.C.A.A. tourney during the past two years. "There are just so many factors involved in a winning season," said Crowe. "It just didn't come together. Our injuries all came in a bunch in the middle of the season. Then we were going pretty well when we lost to Yale [the eventual Ivy winner] and Boston College by one goal apiece at Hanover. I think that was the turning point."
The season ended on a positive note, however, as the Green defeated Harvard, 5-2, in the finale at Thompson Arena. Freshman winger Bruce Cullen scored two goals while senior Jim Jankowski turned back 21 shots from the Dartmouth goal. "We played as well against Harvard as in any game since I've been here," said Crowe. "It was as if the team were playing for the national championship. It gave me a nice feeling and the fans were terrific, too. The people come to watch the hockey and are not hung up on getting to the Easterns or winning the nationals. They appreciate good hockey." Senior cocaptain Mark Bedard, who scored ten goals and 19 assists, was named the team's most valuable player. Juniors Joe Jangro and Shaun Teevens have been elected cocaptairts of next year's team, which will lose nine seniors. "But I'm looking forward to next year," said Crowe. "We'll be competitive."
