In a dashing display of style and flair, the class of '82 has come away with Class of the Year honors. At the awards ceremony during Class Officers Weekend last May, we were presented with a citation which noted our freshman trip scholarships given in honor of Dean Manuel, our Alumni Fund participation record of 87 percent or 733 people, our budding mini-reunion program, and our unparalleled class officers. (Well, three out of four isn't bad!) Class president Philippa Guthrie was attending a state luncheon at Molly's Balloon at the time of the award, but luckily class treasurer John Donahoe was on hand to accept from President McLaughlin in Thompson Arena. Overcome with emotion, John could only quote his idol, Bill Murray, "We came. We saw. We kicked !" (On June 16, only weeks after this erudite acceptance speech, John married Eileen Chamberlain '81 in a beautiful ceremony on Long Island. The newlyweds can be reached care of Stanford Business School, Palo Alto, Calif.)
Everyone is to be congratulated for his or her part in this honor. Every moment spent keeping in touch with classmates and every contribution to Dartmouth makes a difference. The citation is quite flattering and I would like to share with you how the award ends: "Class of the Year honors have never gone to a class so young, but this energetic group of men and women and their outstanding commitment and loyalty to this College and each other can't be denied."
As for the usual business of reporting peoples' whereabouts, wishes, and hang-ups, there is much to report. Some of you have been great and have sent me letters detailing all of your problems, as well as those of your friends. The rest of you should follow their lead. Why write to "Dear Abby," Redbook,Esquire, Working Woman, and the Forum when you can write to your own college magazine?
Wendi Terlizzi says, "Hello to all of my friends," from Seattle, Wash., where she is working as assistant to the hospital administrator of a medical center. Wendi is also doing overtime with Seattle Rape Relief where she counsels and plays on the soft ball team. Wendi provided the following information about her friends which I will relay to you unedited:
"George Huntington, Bob Bauer, and Susan Durning are alive and well and living the good life in Seattle, trying desperately still to avoid corporate America. George is taking pre-med courses at the U. of W.; Susan is learning the importance of importing beer; and Bauer is hanging out, trying to look straight.
"Mary Eiser and Matt Connor have deserted me in Seattle. Matt is now working atop the tallest building in Chicago for . . . Sears (who else?) as a copy editor. Mary is back home in Minnesota living communally, thinking her independent thoughts, and writing beautiful poetry. Meg Bailey is not in Seattle now, but she will be back in August to present her English M.A. thesis at the U. of W. What was it you were writing about, Meggo? 'The Literary Control of Ice Hockey Pucks'?
"Rick Bercuvitz is back in Vermont after a year in San Fran; he is heavily into existentialism and creative thought as manifested in a soon-to-be-published novel of vast sociopolitical importance.' Meanwhile Rich Nadworny and his friendly and beautiful Swedish girlfriend, Maria, are back in the states for the summer and plan to tour the country to see their old friends. Rich is getting his M. A. in Swedish international affairs at the University of Stockholm and he speaks fluent Swedish these days."
Wendi continues, "Randy Gordon is traversing Scandinavia and tantalizing all of those blond beauties with his good looks. Randy, come back to America! Gail Kezer is being stretched between two competing law firms in Washington, D.C. It seems they both want her unmatched sensitivities and abilities. TeeLotson is going to Stanford Law School this fall. And last but not at all least, Brian Tompkins was married to Suzanne on July 7 in South Sutton, N.H. Congratulations!"
While the subject of marriage is fresh in your mind, I received an original bateau lavoir postcard which informed me that PaulJones's two-and-a-half year pursuit of Claire McDougall ended happily and luckily in marriage on St. Patrick's Day last March. Paul was smitten when Claire came to Dartmouth in the summer of 1981 on exchange from the University of Edinburgh. The newly weds are residing in Oxford, England.
The word is that Joe Rizzo has been in a joint Newark-Camden med school program for the last year or so. Anyone wishing to contact the aspiring M.D. should do so care of the anatomy lab where it is rumored Joe spends all of his free time. Joe always was an ardent and astute follower of things anatomical . . . Tom Slocum has been keeping himself busy in Alaska since graduation. He writes that he has "worked in various jobs including archaeology, construction, petty bureaucracy, day care, drafting, and commercial halibut fishing." Tom adds, "Dartmouth did not prepare me for any of these specifically, but it did prepare me for all of them generally. Although I enjoy living in Juneau, I've decided to start an M.S. program in environmental engineering at Northeastern Unversity in Boston this fall."
Norman Hanson is also making a career move which he described in the following manner: "It seems many people have been wondering, 'What's Norman, your basic drama major type, doing preparing budgets for an advertising agency in New Jersey?' Apparently they just couldn't picture me working behind a desk and an adding machine all day, making reports at client meetings, being presentable and three-piece-suity, etc. Well, frankly, I can't picture myself that way either. What we have here is an existential dilemma of major proportions," Norman concludes. "But I've finally solved it come September I'll be putting aside my capitalist enterprises and incurring huge debts again, this time at the University of Texas at Austin, for graduate study in theater history. 'That's more like it,' I hear people saying, 'Get him somewhere where he can't endanger the ecomony of the free world any longer.' I could not agree more."
Keep those photos, letters, and postcards coming!
