"Gimme a Bud, please."

No, not the beer-commercial kind. What we're looking at are classmates whose nicknames are, or were, Bud. The 25th yearbook reveals a dozen witty Buds, to wit: Bud Baker, Bud Cannon, BudCoith, Bud Park, Bud Rieth, Bud Summerfield, Bud Summers, Bud Talley, BudTroxell, and Bud Welch (two Buds have died in the last few years, Bud Pegler and Bud Zetterberg).

Lorenzo "Bud" Baker Jr. Father's nickname was Brud, and Lorenzo Jr. was called Little Brud. Changed to just plain Bud shortly after kindergarten. Wife Ann calls him Lorenzo. Has been in automobile and truck business since 1960, currently administrative manager of Columbus (Ohio) Truck and Equipment Company. In 1983 discovered he had multiple sclerosis and had had it for years, but it hasn't slowed him down. Lots of Episcopal Church work and Midwest travel.

Harold "Bud" Cannon. Can't remember how he got to be called Bud but still is. Insurance business all his life, Cincinnati, Louisville, Kentucky, moved to Orlando in 1977. No retirement plans, but is "playing it easy, enjoying things, lots of golf and beaching." Wife Elizabeth and Don Pfeifle's Maryann are sisters.

Robert "Bud" Coith. Youthful next-door best friend also named Robert, and so Bud became Bud to tell 'em apart. Still is Bud to most people. Surgeon and teacher in Cincinnati his whole life; made full professor last year. Established own clinic for breast cancer at university, now devotes full time to it. With four surgeon associates sees 7,000 patients a year. "Very rewarding" pioneer work in breast cancer research and treatment. Ardent golfer, member U.S. Senior Golf Association. Second home in Sea Island, Ga.

Maurice "Bud" Park. Bud and wife Dorcas lived and practiced law together in Longmeadow/Springfield (Mass.) area their whole lives. Coauthored books on insurance and real estate. Retired to Naples, Fla., a couple of years ago. Sadly, Dorcas died last spring. Bud busy putting pieces together; kids, golf, travel, at al.

Ralph "Bud" Rieth Jr. Ralph's a Jr., but his father didn't like "Junior." Thus, Bud. Wife Emma prefers Ralph. New Hampshire born, bred, and forever, he got out of fabric business a few years back, took up teaching at University of Lowell in Massachusetts (still lives in New Hampshire). Three more semesters and will hang it up. "Can't wait." Built new solar house in country four years ago and eager to put on finishing touches, landscaping, gardens, etc.

Arthur "Bud" Summerfield Jr. Unsure of origin of Bud, but still known as. Also still heads family Chevrolet agency and GMC truck company. Lives in Flint, Mich., but he and wife commute between there and Chicago apartment which they've maintained for 22 years for both business and pleasure. "We love Chicago, especially for its classical music and cultural scene." Have 120 acres in northern Michigan which they are restructuring as original northern prairie - grasses, flowers, etc.

Merrill "Bud" Summers. "Had three family names, so parents called me Bud. Still Bud to all my friends." A stockbroker all his life and still at the Stock Exchange. Joined Shearson/Lehman/American Express in 1969. "It's a nice business, even though you do get a lot of customer complaints." Has lived on Long Island, in Islip, since 1963. No retirement plans. He and wife don't travel much. "We live quietly and do a lot of reading."

Dyer "Bud" Talley. Father named Dyer, so young Dyer became Bud; still a Bud. After 28 years in south, left Atlanta and plastics industry for Southport, Maine, three years ago. "Love being back up north." Is now representative for company which manufactures those blue Harvestore and Aquastore silos. "Good product and market; not much pressure; great fun. See Phil Brown often in nearby Boothbay Harbor."

George "Bud" Troxell. Retired last January from career in oil exploration. He and Nancy in New Orleans, but according to son Todd (at Dartmouth Medical School), they are on the road as consultants as much as they are home.

William "Bud" Welch. We reported in the September issue that Bud had retired this past summer after 34 years with the L. M. Berry Company, and that he and wife, Helen, are dividing their time between Dayton and Florida.

So those are the Buds as far as we know them (we didn't include BuddWelsh because Budd is his given middle name). Other Buds, drop me a line. Delighted to add to the roster.

That's it. Blessings.
