As the seniors approach graduation day, and some are wondering about their futures and what profession to enter, may I tell you what advice was given to Daniel Webster, class of 1801, when he was told the legal profession was overcrowded and he should seek another field for earning his living: "There is always room at the top," replied Daniel.
Those of us who have lived in Boston or its suburbs could hardly miss one of the many "Personal" bookstores around the city, part of the large chain controlled by the Campbell brothers (our own John Campbell). How often we enjoyed the summer, out-of-doors evening brunches which Doris and JohnCampbell spread for the joy of 1921 classmates. Doris still lives in the lovely estate which they occupied when they were young.
Doris reports that in spite of the IRS and Massachusetts taxes, she still enjoys 40 Sylvan Avenue at West Newton. It is good to know that our Chestnut Hill newsboy for 29 Rangely Road was none other than the chap now known as Governor Mike Dukakis, who has promised that he will not raise taxes. So, Doris, you are safe!
That bank trust bfficer in Ohio, E. VanceClark, tells us that he likes the way R. DewittMallary handles our finances. He even likes our news column, but more than that, he. likes everything about 1921 "even though I am prejudiced." Vance, when you state the bald truth, you most certainly are not prejudiced. Just keep sending me news clippings of the famous shoemaking entrepreneurs.
One thing that a secretary must not overlook is the men who join that group of "60 years of continuous giving to the Dartmouth Alumni Fund." Last year three more men were added: G. Harry Chamberlaine,Charles E. Moreau, and William H. Perry Sr. Congratulations, fellows: welcome to that fellowship called "Love of Dartmouth." "Though round the girdled Earth they roam, her spell on them remains."
A word of sympathy to all the widows in the class, who I am certain still remember Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1855-1919). She advised us never to look back. Did she know Satchel Paige? Ella told us this: Laugh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone. For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth But has trouble enough of its own.
And with the above adieu, we close out the year 1984-85. It's been a pleasure keeping you informed.
