Back in May we had a class executive committee meeting in Hanover in connection with the annual Class Officers' Weekend. Those in attendance were: Kester and Debbe Pierson, Fred Carleton, Eifu and Nikko Yamada, Paul Paganucci, Blake Hering and daughter Cameron, Don Smith and friend Jinny Baker, Dick Joslin, Fred and Thelma Stephens, Dick Dunham, and Dick Blum. The Yamadas were on their way home from Europe and visiting their daughter at Kimball Union Academy. We reviewed the oral history project that is being , run by Professor Jere Daniell '55. It is going well and we hope to get some publicity for it. Don Smith received a special commendation from the Secretary's office for an outstanding job in organizing our many reunions throughout each year (witness the schedule above). Paul Paganucci and Dick Dunham were asked to look into the needs of the present un- dergraduates that are being affected by budget cuts. It is felt that we as a class might want to offer meaningful help in an appropriate area. At the conclusion of the College's pfogram, our friends from '54 were honored as the Class of the Year. In his acceptance speech, Dave Mandelbaum admitted that they could not have done it without the challenge and example of Fred Stephens, Pag, and the class of '53.
In June, the Alumni Council had its semi- annual meeting and '53 was very much in evidence. Blake Hering, concluding his two- year term as president, ran an outstanding agenda. Fred Stephens concluded his term as head of the Alumni Fund with a record perfor- mance. Dick Dunham is head of the athletic committee, B.ob Lambert represents the Chicago-area alumni, while Bill McCarthy does the same for Baltimore. Your correspon- dent represents the class secretaries. JohnDodge was in town for the dedication of the Blunt Alumni Center. And Gene Gabianelli was on his way back from fishing in the Grant. At the conclusion of the meeting, Bill Randall '52 was installed as the new president. He said that his class had been used to following in the footsteps of the great class of '53 and was privileged to do so again.
Did you see the July 21 issue of New York Magazine? The title said, "The Best Doctors in New York" and the cover showed 28 of the top 97. Second row, right, was none other than Fran L'Esperance. Of the eight ophthalmologists discussed in the article, Fran was cited for his work in retinal diseases. In ad- dition to his private practice, he is an associate professor of clinical ophthalmology at Colum-bia P bia Presbyterian.
