The Dartmouth Lawyers Association held its first annual meeting in Hanover May 10 and 11. Some 80 of the young organization's 1,100 dues-paying members were present to participate in panel discussions and workshops and to hear speakers, including the Honorable William C. Pryor Jr. '54, chief judge of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
After a few trial meetings, the group was formally established in May 1984 when a founders' committee, which included representatives from the classes of 1952 to 1978, invited all Dartmouth alumni in the legal profession to join. The general goals of the lawyers association are to foster communications among its membership about matters of common professional and educational interest; to publish a directory of Dartmouth- affiliated lawyers and law students throughout the country; and to encourage graduate legal studies among current undergraduates. There are five subcommittees in which members may participate: jobs for Dartmouth lawyers; educational programs; professional seminars and meetings; membership and directory; and communication and business development.
The jury is still out on how many of the College's remaining 3,000 alumni lawyers may find the new organization appealing. But the second annual meeting has been scheduled for next May in Hanover. For more information, interested persons should contact the organization's president, John Mathias '69, P.O. Box A2, Hanover, NH 03855.
