The following commemoration was read by class secretary Dave Wiggins in the presentation of the "Spirit of '51" award to Frank Smallwood in October 1985 during the class mini-reunion in Hanover:

Frank, you lead a busy life advancing the cause of humanity. Your undergraduate years were a preview of things to come as you packed everything possible into each day. Managing editor of TheDartmouth was a full-time occupation in its own right, to say nothing of successfully furthering a college education, participating in student government on the Undergraduate Council, serving as a member of Green Key, and being an active member of your fraternity and senior society.

Even a small selection of all your positions and assignments makes impressive reading: Doctor of Philosophy, Vermont State Senator, Fenceviewer in the Town of Norwich, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Vermont State Colleges, author of many books, articles, and reports, Dean of Faculty at Dartmouth, Vice President of the College, and currently you are in one of the most significant posts of the College, Director of the Rockefeller Center for Social Sciences. As if any proof of your dedication to illumination of social sciences was needed, your success in bringing the first national TV debate by the several Democratic presidential candidates in the 1984 New Hampshire primary election to the Dartmouth campus provoked great drama and interest not only for students, but also for all the people of your region as well. The U.S. Army probably had little appreciation of the high-powered corporal they had in their midst in 1945!

"You and your wife, Ann (who has her own successful career in the Dartmouth administration), have raised a family of four children, and despite family and professional demands, have always found time to participate in class activities. Along with many others, you have regularly helped with the class Alumni Fund effort, but as only a few dedicated classmates have, you have served as class newsletter editor. The moderating job you did with the panel of classmate-reporters on the Reagan reelection campaign made for one of our finest mini-reunions we have ever held.

For these, along with other unrecounted contributions to class, College, and community, we are pleased to recognize you with the 1985 Spirit of '51 Award."

Wes Nutten represented Dartmouth at the inauguration of David Davenport as the sixth President of Pepperdine University in California on October 21, 1985.

Jim Asker called to say hello and chat about his and his wife's planned move from the jungles of Manhattan to Columbia, Md., near Baltimore.

A copy of the 1986 Booklet of College Alumni Officers just arrived, and I was delighted to find the following '51s active in college affairs: Mike Heyman, Trustee; Mike Choukas, director of alumni affairs as well as member of the Alumni Council committee on enrollment and admissions; Lu Martin, director of capital giving; PeteBogardus, Alumni Council representative for Region VII as well as enrollment and admissions standing committee chairperson; Bob Hopkins, 1986 reunion giving chairman; Buck Scott, vice president of the Alumni Associations and Clubs; BillHosier, president of Phoenix (Ariz.) Club; George Emerson, treasurer of Santa Barbara Club; Jim Keegan, liaison officer of Bridgeport Club; Bob Koski, liaison officer of Sarasota Club; Ken Little, liaison officer of Melrose-Winchester Club; JackJacobey, vice president of Essex and Morris Counties Club; Hank Nachman and Al Brout, president and treasurer, respectively, of the New York City Club; JackSkewes, director of College Business Affairs; Frank Smallwood, director of Rockefeller Center; Berl Bernhard, former Trustee; and 12 other classmates who are living former Alumni Council members. I hope I didn't forget any others. The list does not include, of course, our official class officers, all of whom are well known to everyone.
