Bruce Beasley and Jeff Brown are this year's Class of 1961 Fellows. According to 1961 Fellows chairman Charlie Buffon, they are to be in Hanover April 24 and 25. (With luck in getting this magazine out on schedule, this will give those of you in the Hanover area who haven't heard a couple of days' notice.)
They'll be talking to a sculpture class and an art history class, and Charlie hoped to set up the informal evening session for faculty and interested students. The faculty coordinator is Professor Matthew Wysocki. Jeff is now an art dealer in Boston while Bruce is an internationallyknown sculptor.
President Dave Prewitt reports that the class executive committee had a successful meeting at the Princeton Club in New York on January 15. At that time, RonBoss reported the class was more than halfway toward meeting our reunion Alumni Fund goal of $1,001,961. And RonWybranowski reports everything is on track for reunion, June 12-15.
Gerry Kaminsky, chairman of our nominating committee, is in the market for candidates for class leadership and is looking for someone to take on a new job that comes with advancing age class bequest chairman.
Did you notice the handsome new stationery listing Ron's committee chairs for reunion, including Jeff Conn, treasurer; Henry Eberhardt, registration; CharlieBuffon, fellows program; Jeff Brown, art show; Marvin Witofsky, entertainment; Linwood Bean and Bill Cogswell, food and beverage; Larry Levy, sports; and the Reverend George Bland, memorial service. Of course, we've already talked a lot of Alan Orschel and his reunion book committee. And I suspect you all got the questionnaire from Tom McDonough asking for your feedback as he plans a second Passages-type program.
As this is being written, Charlie still hopes to gather as many of the participants in the fellows program as possible for a discussion at reunion of the program's achievements. He's also planning to invite faculty. Some fellows probably won't make reunion. Jake Gillespie has just taken on a new assignment as USIA chief in San Salvador, said Charlie, and of course, Steve Bosworth has got his hands full as ambassador to the Philippines.
Some new faces among 1961s in Dartmouth leadership, according to the new edition of Dartmouth College Alumni Officers. For instance, Biff Olson, a physician practicing in Omaha, is now the Region IV representative on the Alumni Council, and Dick Beattie is an at-large representative elected by the Alumni Council. They join Noel Kuhrt, who represents the Club Officers Association. Gerry Kaminsky,Vic Rich, and Mike Murphy have rotated off the Council.
Former Alumni Councilor Tom Russell is now one of two vice presidents of the Association of Alumni. Al Rozycki is the current president of the Dartmouth Medical School Alumni Council.
We've already talked about the switch in class leadership, with head agent RonBoss becoming reunion giving chairman and Art Kelton becoming head agent.
The list of '61s in club offices seems to be shrinking. This year's presidents are Bill Blue in Louisville and Dave Cook in Grand Rapids, Mich. Art Johnson in Watertown, Conn., is the only club vice president. Secretaries include Ray Blanchard, Dartmouth Club of the Seacoast Region, Lauren Mason in Monmouth County, N.J., and Steve Kirschner, Dartmouth Club of the Mohawk Valley. Treasurers are Phil Oehler in Orange County, Calif., and Lee Heap, Dartmouth Club of Central Virginia. Also holding club offices are Pete Stuart, continuing education officer, Southeastern Connecticut, and MikeMurphy, scholarship fund chairman, Dartmouth Club of Central Florida.
A bunch of us are still involved in recruiting. John Henry is an area enrollment director, and John Damon, VicRich, Bill Blue, and Robert Rentto are district enrollment directors. Damon, Rich, Blue, and Rentto also are club liaison officers, along with me.
But if you look at the same issue last year and in 1984, you'd see we're beginning to wind down as club leaders. Are we really getting that old? I hope not.
Oscar Arslanian has scored a major success with the first-ever pay-per-view concert. The concert, performed live before 85,000 people last August in Riverfront Stadium in Baton Rouge, was broadcast live via satellite over the Choice Channel. Among the stars were Chubby Checker, Bo Diddley, Little Anthony, Lou Christie, the Coasters, the Diamonds, Lesley Gore, and Fabian. The show was then syndicated to dozens of television stations, probably including one in your hometown, where the show was broadcast in November or December. (It was sold in almost all of the top 100 markets.) Oscar put the show on with Fabian Forte.
