On the eve of May 1 we received a call from Werner Janssen, who was phoning from Kennedy Airport. He had just received a "24-hour notice" to report to his agent in England the following morning, with the result that he could no longer be with us to play the score of "Oh, Doctor" at our 65th reunion. Apparently Werner has rediscovered de Leon's Fountain of Youth, for he has been chosen to compose the score for a new musical that is scheduled to open at London's Savoy Theatre this fall. If you can make it as tuneful, Werner, as "Oh, Doctor," WeeklyVariety will have to give it four and a half stars. Especially if your collaborator can come up with comparable lines to those unforgettable lyrics of Gene Markey '18 when he wrote:

I want the next scene laid, Where years ago I played. Where down that Old Main Street Each soul I meet I'll know and greet. I ask for no renown Only to settle down, There in that little town That I call mine.

To those of us who had the good fortune to choose the Dartmouth campus as our retirement home, those words never fail to bring tears to our eyes. And that is especially true of me at this moment as I sign off on my first attempt to fill the shoes of a long line of dedicated and talented 1921 secretaries, headed recently by Jack Hurd, Bishop Gilson, and that master of nostalgia, Hal Geilich.

One of America's oldest and most prestigious clubs in New York City is the Union League Club at Park Avenue and 37th Street. Amongst the 10 oldest senior members is our own Jack Hubbell. The club's most recent brochure pictures an interview with four of this group, relating the past glories of the institution and forecasting the future. Although a stag organization for more than a century, the club does occasionally admit women to social luncheons. At a recent event where Barbara Walters was the speaker, one young woman rose to her feet and asked a question: "I've just graduated from Dartmouth. Have you got any advice for me?" Ms. Walters replied: "Yes. Don't get pregnant."

At our 65th reunion there were many compliments paid to Harry Chamberlaine as publisher of 1921's class directory. Unfortunately a few responses arrived after the book had gone to press. Russ Bailey is going to publish the highlights on each of the above in a coming issue of "The Smoker."
