McLaughlin Honorary Degree Recipients: Senator Bradley; William G. Bowen, former president of Princeton, now president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Senator Warren B. Rudman (R-New Hampshire); Norman F. Maclean '24, author of the classic novel ARiver Runs Through It; South African physician and anti-apartheid leader Nthato H. Motlana; historian Barbara W. Tuchman, author of Guns of August and numerous other books; and biomedical researcher Dr. Paul C. Zamecnik '33, pioneer in the mechanism of protein synthesis. Options: The song: The traditional version of "Men of Dartmouth" was printed in the Commencement program, along with a newer version in which a few words were changed to specifically include women. Those present were invited to sing either version. The ceremony: A second commencement ceremony was held in the afternoon on the Cutter Hall lawn. At the much less formal ceremony, Black American poet and essayist June Jordan was keynote speaker.
