In this, my first report as the 1987-88 President of your Alumni Council, I send GREETINGS to all 44,000 alumni. I hope I will have the opportunity to meet with many of you during the coming year.
Just in case some of you missed past-President Mark Harty's opening column in this magazine a year ago, I think it worthwhile to review the makeup and purpose of the Council.
The Dartmouth Alumni Council consists of 94 members elected from the following constituencies:
Geographical Regions (Clubs) 23 Class Representatives 30 Class Officers Associations 5 Club Officers Association 1 Members Elected at-Large 24 Professional Schools 3 Alumni Fund Chairman 1 DCAC Representative 1 Faculty 1 Undergraduates 4 President of Council 1 Total 94
Members are elected for three-year terms. Regional members are selected by individual alumni clubs on a rotating basis; class representative selections are made shortly before reunions; at-large members are presented by the Nominating Committee to the Council for election at the annual spring meeting; undergraduates are selected two each from the senior and junior classes and serve for two years. The two most important purposes of the Alumni Council are:
1) To nominate Alumni Trustees (of which there are seven) for election by the Board.
2) To act as an interchange between the alumni body and the other constituencies of the College: Trustees, administration, faculty, students.
• To assist those constituencies in the development of programs and policies.
• To promote the interchange of Alumni ideas
• To keep the Alumni body more closely informed of the operations and activities of the College.
To accomplish this work, the Council has established 15 standing committees. Each member of the Council sits on an average of two committees, each of which meets two or more times per year. In addition, ad hoc committees are established periodically to study certain situations, the most notable current one being the Alma Mater Study Committee. The Council meets as a body twice a year for three days; this year's meetings will be held December 3-5, 1987 and June 2-4, 1988.
In future columns in this magazine during this year, I intend to highlight the activities of most of the standing committees. This month I wish to emphasize one veryimportant responsibility of the Nominating Committee: the nomination of a candidate this fall to fill the position that will become vacant upon the expiration of Chairman Norman (Sandy) McCulloch's term next June. The Nomination Committee is actively soliciting suggestions from all alumni. Please send suggestions with brief bios to Committee Chairman A1 Cook '62; 1225 17th Street, 23rd Floor; Denver, CO 80202. The deadline for receiving suggestions is 30 days prior to the fall meeting of the Council (i.e., November 3rd).
In closing, I want to thank past-president Mark Harty for his tremendous leadership of the Council during the past year, and for his wonderful personal support. Thanks to Mark's appointment, I had the absolutely unique opportunity to serve on the Presidential Search Committee which selected President James 0. Freedman as Dartmouth's 15th President. It was a truly rewarding and educational experience, one that prepared me well for this job.
In the same vein, I wish to welcome Ron Boss '6l as President-elect of the Council and to congratulate him for his tremendous accomplishment as Chairman of the record breaking 1987 Alumni Fund. Ron will be filing two positions this next year as both Alumni Fund Chairman and Presidentelect. I know he will do both with distinction.. I look forward to working with him.
And I will look forward to conversing with all of you again next month and in the months to come. Also, I welcome any ideas and suggestions you may have. Please feel free to write me in care of the Alumni Affairs office.
