Seldom have I had the privilege of having three sources of information from which I can prepare the Class Notes. I will use the most important first. Our good friend and classmate, Charlie Zimmerman, has had the honor of having the function room at Blunt named for him because of his generosity to the College and for his outstanding success in the life insurance industry. During World War II he served as a captain in the navy. In 1956 he returned to Connecticut Mutual as president and director, and was elected chairman in 1967. He retired in 1972 but continued as a director until March 1974. Our congratulations to a good man.
The second item is sad in reporting on the deaths of Monk Keith, Kenneth Fortune, and Leon Sargent. Obituaries will follow on these great men when more information is available. Also we have lost the widow of Frank Doten. Gladys lived at the Hanover Inn for the past 17 years and was well known to almost all classmates returning to Hanover. Frank had been a generous supporter of the athletic teams.
Perhaps one of the greatest things to happen in Hanover in many years was the groundbreaking in West Lebanon just across the Hanover border on Route 120. This will include the Dartmouth Medical School, the Mary Hitchcock Hospital, and all the research laboratories of the complex. It will rank among the greatest medical centers in the United States. It is already the fourth oldest. Following the groundbreaking there was a gala dinner in a redecorated Thayer and the initiation of efforts to raise $2l8 million. Already $20 million has been raised of the $55 million in gifts, the balance to come from surpluses in the College and Medical School and a tax-free bond issued by the state.
