A delightful early fall long weekend with Moose and Joan Rowan and Howard and Roseanne Germain at the Rowan home in Greensboro, N.C., provides a nucleus for these notes. Of equal importance was the mini-reunion but much of that will be reported in the newsletter before you see this.

The Leggats took lobsters to North Carolina and the Germains arrived earlier than expected to insure that no one ate their share. A golf game on Friday included JohnGooding, who lives in the area, and Howard was the big winner. Unfortunately a cold kept John and Ethel from dinner on Friday night and the trip to Davidson for tailgate lunch and a Dartmouth win on Saturday. However, adopted classmate Allen Herrick joined us at the picnic area as did Howardand Alice Sawyer.

At the game we sat with Bob and JeanLee and saw Tracy Mitchell whose new bride, Maxine, was across the field so we missed meeting her.

The Rowans have a busy retirement life as do the Germains. Joan does a lot of volunteer work for hospital, charitable, and political organizations. Moose has a golf course available (he lives on the fourteenth hole), but also does a lot of reading and stays close to events at Dartmouth so that he can prod the administration on projects which could incur alumni objection.

Howard's retirement includes serving as ranger at Sea Pines golf course (Hilton Head, S.C.) and as a tennis umpire at various tournaments including the U.S. Open. Although he has not been on Court 1 at the Open he has been an official at matches involving Andre Agassi and Michael Cheng and finds them both refreshing and good and gentlemanly hopes for the future of American tennis.

The mini-reunion in September was marked by mostly good weather and wonderful organization by George and BetsyBarr with help from Cliff and Betty Jordan. The Johnny Brooks Memorial Tournament was won by Allon Pierce in the first year that wives were eligible for the top prize. Spence and Connie Johnson provided a super band at their Quechee home for cocktails before Friday's dinner at the Red Pines Restaurant. Saturday's dinner at the DOC house featured awards to two 1945 Men of the Year, Frank Hutchins and Eliot Mover. Both have been involved '45 leaders through the years. The citation for Frank includes reference to his award as Man of the Year in Rochester and a Dartmouth Alumni Award in 1979. Also he served as Head Agent from 1964—69, bequest chairman from 1969-75, and class president from 1975-80. He has also been involved in local alumni activities and both he and Jean have received local community service awards.

Eliot's citation reflects his service as head agent from 1955-64 and as president for the next five years. He also did enrollment work in Boston and lectured at Tuck School. He was one of the founders of the Young Presidents organization. The Movers and the Hutchinses are actively involved in class activities.

A full list of those present will be in the newsletter or here later but first-time attendees were Bert and Beverly Glovsky and the Sawyers. The most significant news of the weekend was the John and Jan Osborn are the parents of Jennifer, class of 2010!

The next gathering will be the Princeton game in September 1989, so make your plans now.

Cheers and a happy and health 1989.
