Our 35th Reunion, June 12-15, 1989, is less than six months away. It's time to set the dates aside and make plans. Reunion chairman Dick Cahn and his team promise a memorable time. His high-powered committee is working hard. Dick Fleming, profiled in the last column, is responsible for the tent activities and has enlisted two stalwart assistants in Sherm Horton and John Alger. As we shall learn, Dick knows both how to enlist talent and to cover his risks.

Sherm Horton, Nashua, N.H., practices law with an emphasis on banking and commercial contracts. Sherm indicates that his firm, which bears his name among others, is medium-size in New Hampshire and small in comparison to Boston and New York firms. He entered law practice following two years in the navy and three at Harvard Law School. Not atypical of lawyers in smaller cities, Sherm has expended a great deal of energy and time in community affairs, including an involvement in politics, a stint as ward alderman which he abandoned after three years. Spouse Judy, however, took up the slack in a big way she has managed a congressional campaign and during the recent election, managed a significant function in a gubernatorial campaign. Sherm and Judy have four offspring. Two of their sons, Mike and Andrew, graduated from the University of New Hampshire and their professions are, respectively, teacher and Peace Corps member in Costa Rica. Daughter Sally is Dartmouth '90 and youngest, Tom, is a senior at Governor Dummer Academy. Sherm and Judy enjoy visits to England and go at least annually. You will have to look twice for Sherm at Reunion, because, prompted by high blood sugar, he has lost 20 pounds and is off the "sauce." (Judy, by the way, suffered a heart attack in October but is doing exceptionally well.)

John Alger also practices law, graduated from Harvard Law School, and opted against a big city practice. He lives and has an office in the village of Osterville, Mass., on Cape Cod. This community has 3,500 year-round residents and is part of the town of Barnstable. The town grows mightily in population in the summertime. John's practice includes real estate, probate, and estate planning. (He likes to comment that for "vitality" he moved his office on Main Street three times, once crossing the street.) Far from sedentary, John has moderated the representative town meeting for 20 years. This body, comprising 250 citizens, challenges his tact, diplomacy, and parliamentary skills. Spouse Nancy shares John's interest in community affairs, but is primarily involved in the study of French literature. The Algers have two children, Sarah '80 and John '83. Sarah went on to Boston University and is presently a lawyer on Nantucket. John earned a master's degree at Columbia University in fine arts and aims to be a writer. A serene and peaceful Cape Cod is somewhat an anachronism, particularly during the summer season. No problem for the Algers they ride a dune buggy seven miles out onto Sandy Neck where they have a camp. No phones, no electricity, and no hassle.

Dave Siegal, M.D., is responsible for attendance. Dick Fleming is in charge of tent activities. Both are health care professionals. And Dick's backups are two Harvard trained lawyers. If you contemplate having an emergency or a civil action of any kind, don't miss the reunion!
