Happy New Year and Cheers to 1988! I hope you emerged from the holidays not looking like me, like a human pear.

Now, focus your attention on our Fifth Reunion from June 17-19. Bob Goldman has assembled a wonderful committee of "movers and shakers" whose only goal is to mastermind the best reunion possible. Whether you already know them or not, you will be good friends with ShelleyDrake and Susie Donovan by June. They're in charge of publicizing the entire event. When they call you, please be receptive. Patty Shepard Green will be handling all the financial activities. "I needed a fur coat," says Patty. Oooops! Wrong column. Rick Baker, although a dangerous choice, will be our social chairperson. Kathy Hoes is piecing together enough photographic evidence to make a video presentation. Send slides, pictures of Dartmouth, and photos of what you've been doing since 1983. Send them by air, send them by mail, send them to me at the Birmingham Jail. Jenny Hanley, in her best imitation of Cezanne, designed our reunion logo and is working on souvenirs. Kate Drislane Howe is in charge of registration. Kelly and AndreHunter will feed us. And Jeff Shapiro will make us dance. Now you know who to blame if it rains that weekend.

Even if you're not connected to finance you know that one dark day last October the stock market became seasick and dropped by about 500 points. Time didn't write or call me to find out how I weathered "Black Monday," but reporters did manage to corral lan Weiner and Neil Donnenfeld. There was even a picture of lan! I stared at his photograph, admiring the the tailored suit, The Financial Times curled in his hand, the pensive gaze. Lan and I were on the same freshman trip together. Even back then, I was already far behind. Lan came of age in the shadows of Gile.and Hitchcock, a landscape of dead-end parties and fire extinguisher fights. But after the stock market's wild gyrations, even lan was left a little breathless and in search of stability. "All I could do was scream 'Sell! Sell! Sell!'," he remembers. Then Time found Mr. Donnenfeld at Wharton, staring at a ticker tape. "I used to buy $75,000 of champagne per year when I was selling municipal bonds," Neil told the reporter. "But now it looks like I'm back to Bud Lite."

At any rate, lan is still a portfolio manager at Clemente Capital. Neil's career is, put euphemistically, on hold. But they'll both be at the reunion.

Here's a report from Dan Gelb, who will also be at the reunion. Dan married Jillian Precourt (Muhlenberg '84) way back last April, whereupon the two headed overseas for a five-week bicycle trip in northern Italy. Dan graduated from NYU Med School last June and is a surgical intern at Rochester, N.Y.

In other marriage news, Phil Hultin passed through Hanover last fall with bride Monical Horawski (U. of Toronto '86) stopping just long enough to say that after he attends the reunion, he'll be heading west for Madison, Wis. And Rob Bowers accomplished the near impossible by finding Ruth Kennedy and love at Harvard Business School. If they aren't married yet, they will be soon. Rob is an associate with Robertson, Colman & Stephens (investment bankers) in Boston.

Jeffrey Soldatis secured his M.D. from Case Western last May, graduating as a member of the medical honor society and with a prestigious essay award. Dr. J. is interning at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver and then will return to Cleveland for his residency in orthopedic surgery.

Much more news is on the way. Please take the time now to plan for the reunion. If you arrive before June 17, there are plenty of pre-reunion activities planned. No excuses.

Thanks for your patronage.
