Hood Museum Director Jacquelynn Baas has been granted $10,000 by the National Endowment for the Arts to study Dart- mouth's Orozco mural. Baas will travel in March to Guadalajara, Mexico, and meet some of Jose Clemente Orozco's family. She also plans to visit other Orozco murals in Mexico City, Veracruz, and Jiquilpan.

"Orozco used a visual language in his work, as seen through his use of symbols," said Baas. "But these symbols are very personal, and I hope that some of his other works may hold the key to their meaning."

New York City is also on Baas' itinerary. She will visit the Museum of Modern Art's Latin American Archives. "Those archives hold information about Orozco's eight years in New York City, the time immediately prior to his arrival at Dartmouth," Baas noted. "I don't think they were happy years for him."
