Mariken Straub's been leading biking/hiking expeditions for teenagers for the past two summers, and is now working at an outdoor living center in Maryland, helping groups of schoolchildren learn self-confidence and group dynamic skills. Mariken's very pleased about work and life on the poverty line!

Best wishes for a happy Year of the Dragon from David Cohn (a.k.a. Pablo). He was in Japan until January, where he spent the last year doing research on Japanese computer science, with a fellowship from the American Electronics Association and Hitachi Corporation. While in Japan he spent a lot of time eating sushi and learning to talk funny. Now David's headed back in the U.S. attending U.W. grad school to finish his doctorate in computer science.

Catherine Jacobs reports that she and Gretchen Townsend graduated with M.A.s from the Winterthur Program in early American culture in Delaware last spring. Upon school's end, Gretchen traveled about Europe with Nancy Vogel for a while, before returning home to California. She intends to start her Ph.D. next fall.

Russ Mitchell is engaged to Kathy Bowler '83. They are planning to get married in September—possibly on Block Island.

Andy Crowe is working in San Francisco for Rolm, a division of IBM.

Mac Paul is back in the U.S. after spending some time working in Africa. He's thinking about going back to law school. Chris Hunt is in the Far East working for the Wall Street Journal.

Scott McDonald is doing leveraged buyouts and mergers and acquisitions for the First National Bank of Chicago. As if his job doesn't keep him busy enough, he's also been working towards his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, and will reach the fruits of his labor this June! If you have a prospective deal, give him a call.

Best wishes to Brian Goldner and Barbara Kalt, married on December 19 in Chicago. The wedding was said to be absolutely beautiful! The honeymoon, however, was a disaster! First, the trip to Mazatlan took 15 hours. Barbara immediately caught a parasite and felt horrible. Once she started feeling better, Mexico was hit with a wind storm. So, the newlyweds packed up their belongings and made a 16-hour return trip to cold but predictable Chicago—three days ahead of schedule!

Congratulations are also in order for Peter Blum, who recently moved from his journalism position with the Evansville Press to the Indianapolis Star. I've been told that his articles appear on the front page quite frequently!

Kenny Graham had his first annual New Year s party in New York City. Rumor has it that it was a raucous affair with the usual amount of destruction, of course.

Pat Collins is working on the Maybelline account at DDB-Needham, and is making numerous trips to their office in Memphis. On a recent trip, Pat found time to visit Graceland, and brought back several souvenirs—including a bottle of Elvis tears.

Unidentified sources say that Andy Ford, who's working for a political consulting firm in Washington, D.C., is madly in love. Apparently he may have turned down job offers in Chicago and Boston because of it. Tim Sherman's living like a duke at Duke's graduate school of English. Apparently he's on scholarship and has a beautiful, huge apartment all to himself.

Peggy Engelhart is engaged to a coworker at Arthur Andersen and is going to be married on May 28.

Kevin Umeh is in Chicago, working for Exchange National Bank.

Andy Cohen is going to Yale Law, but took a year off to live in Mexico City to live with his girlfriend. He's basically a househusband, learning Spanish and collecting recipes for mole sauce.

Sue Finegan, the illustrious president of our class, quit her job and moved to Boston with law school plans for fall. Mimi Reilly left her job at Procter & Gamble to work for Welch's in Concord.

John Wolfe, finishing his last year at Vanderbilt Law in Nashville, is debating whether to accept a law position in Los Angeles or retire to a stud farm in Tennessee.

Good luck to Tiger Shaw, who's representing the class of '85 in the Olympics in Calgary.

Congratulations to Tyler and MarnieLindblad, who are expecting a visit from the stork this July or August. Tyler will received his M.B.A. from Northwestern in June.

If any of you are interested in being a guest columnist for a month of two, please let me know. I am interested in including as many of our classmates as possible, and your help—either through sending me news or by volunteering to write on occasion—will enable this column to stay fresh and interesting!
