Harold Shapiro was inaugurated as Princeton's eighteenth president in January, making Princeton the third Ivy League school to inaugurate a chief executive within the last 15 months. Benno Schmidt assumed Yale's presidency in September 1986, and James O. Freedman was inaugurated at the College last July. The cogs of Brown's search committee have also begun to turn, following the October announcement of President Howard Swearer's resignation.

As this was written, the University of lowa had yet to come up with a replacement for Freedman.
