Some of you may have missed the U.S.News & World Report survey of higher education, in which Dartmouth was ranked No. 6 in the nation by 110 university presidents. The main criteria were faculty, philosophy, tradition, students, and physical facilities. Something to think about for those of our classmates who have been voicing concern about the events of the last few years.
Getting along to the news (thanks to Reg and Dero's having the green cards addressed to me), a nice note from ex-prexy Len Bryant tells of the arrival of grandchild No. 11, courtesy of daughter Laurie, home from Bangladesh for the occasion. She came home from Pakistan three years ago for No. 10, and will take off in February to join her diplomat husband at his new station in Saudi Arabia. Joe Sholkin and wife Solveig are off in a different direction, to Nicaragua where they are heavily involved in a new home for war orphans of both sides. Joe takes a dim view of the Contras—"their victims know they are not freedom fighters . . . our government is only deceiving their own people!"
From Puerto Rico a card from PerryWachtel offers to show any classmates who visit the island between November and April a good time, including an island tour, golf, etc. (I'll have to include a more timely reminder in the October column!) BobRichter provides an impressive list of '35ers who meet regularly for lunch in Sarasota (see the Tear Bag for the list), and paints an equally impressive list of social activities for the area. And Lew Cole brags of the Oc- tober birth of his first greaf-grandchild, as well as granddaughters at Stanford Business School,. Brown, and Louisville. The Coles are spending the winter in Hawaii.
Rey and Laura Moulton gained serious poundage on a Caribbean tour, and missed Frank Specht's big '35 party in the process, much to their regret. (They probably would have picked up more poundage if they'd been there.) Buck Weil reports a move to Arizona by Gordon York, and a great time at Bud Cahoon's Cape Cod get-together. Bill White is "still surviving by the grace of God and hemodialysis." God bless you, Bill!
Maurie Rapf is back in Hanover to teach screenwriting in the winter quarter, and Hall Col ton tells of a move to "a bigger apartment in a more rural setting" in Merrimack, N.H. Hal's only other news: nine grandchildren and another on the way.
That's it! Peace and love to you all. All y'all.
