Stephen M. Mullins '54 President, Alumni Council
APRIL 1988

As spring thaws come to Hanover and Chicago, I round the turn toward home in my year as Alumni Council president- three more columns after this one. It was a great pleasure to greet so many of you at Alumni Club dinners in Denver, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The crowds that came out to welcome Jim Freedman on his first visit were truly impressive. I know that he was very grateful.

I look forward to seeing many more of you at similar functions in Cleveland (April 11), Chicago (April 13), and the Twin Cities (April 14). Come and listen to our dynamic new president.

This month, we highlight two more standing committees of the Alumni Council as reported by their chairmen.

ALUMNI CONTINUING EDUCATION

The committee advises and consults with the Office of Alumni Continuing Education about its programs, especially regarding their fundamental purposes and practical operation. Typically, through discussion at the semiannual meeting of the Alumni Council, the committee encourages the highest quality and volume of continuing education programming for Dartmouth graduates, their families, and friends, consistent with the highest goals and purposes of the College.

At its December 1987 meeting, the committee discussed expanding alumni seminars from 15 to 30 per year and developing a series of videotapes for use in club seminars. The videotape format could reduce the cost of seminars and increase the number of participants.

The committee also reviewed Alumni Colleges for 1988 ("Leadership," directed by Roger Masters) and 1989 ("China," directed by Robert Henricks). The committee has been concerned about the reduction in attendance caused by fewer younger alumni taking two-week vacations. In 1989 the China program will be divided into two parts, allowing younger alumni to participate over a long weekend rather than for the full 12-day program.

The members of this committee are: Joseph D. Robinson IV '65, Chair George B. Harris III '50 Walter S. Yusen '58 Ronald Wybranowski '61 Albert T. T. Cook Jr. '62 Robert L Bucher II '64 Derek T. Knudsen '65 Ronald S. London '67 Robert A. Reich '68 E. Doane Grinnell III '69, Vice Chair Robert J. Pansegrau '70 Peter S. Pratt '71 Elizabeth P. Roberts '79 Steven L. Calvert '68 C. Dwight Lahr James Wright Mardy Cornish, Secretary ENROLLMENT AND ADMISSIONS

This committee acts as an advisory board to Dean of Admissions, reporting to the Alumni Council at semiannual meetings. As such, the primary purpose of the committee is to help the Admissions Office in organizing alumni/'alumnae enrollment workersand interviews throughout the United States andCanada.

Two primary areas of focus in the short term, 1988-89, concern:

Efforts to achieve a more substantial parity inthe number of women undergraduates at the College by increasing the number of women in theapplicant pool, and by increasing the number ofwomen who accept our offers of admission.

Efforts to compete successfully in attractingsignificant numbers of high caliber applicantsfrom minority groups, and by increasing thenumber of those accepted by the College whoeventually matriculate at Dartmouth.

Over a longer perspective, the committee must be concerned with assisting the Admissions Office in identifying better ways of promoting Dartmouth College to secondary schools and their student populations, and following up on applicants who have been accepted to Dartmouth, using the special resources and energies of the alumni body as a whole, with particular emphasis on the more recent graduating classes.

Committee members are: Donald P. Graves '66, Chair William H. Carpenter '50 George B. Harris '50 Mark H. Smoller '53 C. Eugene Givens '55 Laurence H. Silberman '57 Kenneth E. DeHaven '61, DMS '63 James B. Gilchrist '61 Carl S. DuRei '64 Thomas A. Good '64 Alan M. Nadel '64 Parker J. Beverage '68 Jonathan H. Winer '73 Thomas W. Eggleston '74 Gary L. Until next month, I wish those of you whom I won't see on the club circuit a pleasant early spring.
