At the December 1-2 meetings of the Alumni Council, with president Russell A. Boss '61 and president-elect J. Murry Bowden '71 presiding, councilors viewed "A Way of Learning," a new film that encourages Native Americans to pursue a liberal arts education and reaffirms Dartmouth's commitment to attracting Native American students. Filmed in part at the College, it was sponsored by the Native American Council, Native American students at Dartmouth, and Burlington Northern Corporation.
Dean Charles Hutchinson of the Thayer School spoke about expansion of both Thayer's facilities and its engineering program. And director of athletics Ted Leland discussed the challenges and problems of Dartmouth's athletic program. A panel discussion examined "Residential Life and the Future of Fraternities and Sororities," with differing viewpoints presented by Trustee Ronald Schram '64, Dean Edward Shanahan, head of the Coed Fraternity/Sorority Council Daniel Paris '89, and DOC president Kristen Dillon '89.
Another panel discussed "The Curriculum at Dartmouth: What Should We Teach? What Should We Require?" Professors Thomas Bickel (math), Jeremy Rutter (classics), and Pamela Crossley (history) presented their views on what's good and what's lacking in the College's current academic program.
