Another helpful boost from George Barr in having cards from the recent newsletter sent to me means enough material for at least two columns. And if some of you still have the green cards please use them with preference being for something more about yourself than an address change.
From the Boston Herald a note that EvanConnell is going to have high-powered acting talent in the upcoming movie "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge" based on his two novels Mrs.Bridge and Mr. Bridge. Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward will have the lead roles in the film which is based on the lives of the Kansas City well-to-do in the years before World War 11.
Bob Cate has a helpful medical suggestion for all of us. The "athletic disease" doctor who diagnosed his sciatica told him to be happy with what he had and doesn't have—and to forget the diagnosis. Since then Bob has had only an occasional twinge. His wife, Kitty, spent three months in Brazil as a guest of the government while she edited a new edition of her classic book on Folklore in Recife Carnaval.
There are a lot of travelers in our group. Charlie Youmans returned from three weeks in Russia and found the environment drab. "The people were friendly but nobody smiles." Now he is off to Alaska by RV.
The recent troubles in China found Fredand Virginia Hatch right in the middle. They were there on a People-to-People medical exchange and were in Beijing during the student hunger strike and Gorbachev's visit. Virginia spent what must have been a harrowing morning in Tienanmen Square. They left Beijing on the day martial law was imposed and the rest of their stay was less eventful. Fred added a note that the residents of Hong Kong are very worried about the Chinese takeover scheduled for 1997 particularly after the events of "Bloody Saturday." The Rowans also were in China but left Beijing before the major events took place.
New Florida addresses for Ted Hubbard and Emmett Fallon presumably mean they are retired, while a card from Bud and DeeMorris brings the news that they have completed the move from Carmel, Calif., to the house that they built in Santa Fe, N. M.
These notes should reach you shortly before the September mini-reunion (15-17). Try to join your classmates for golf, a football game, and sociability. It is always a fun occasion even when the weather is uncooperative.
Cheers.
