This is what happens when the Alumni Magazine invites a distinguished alumnus, Chris Miller '63, back to campus to research an essay. We ask for a literary description of fraternities and he turns to muckraking.
Miller's background might suit him better for business (he got his Tuck degree in 1964) or advertising (during a five-year stint at a Madison Avenue agency he wrote the famous "I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" commercials). But it is his intimate knowledge of the fraternities of the sixties that qualifies him to compare that era with the system today.
We turned to him after getting numerous letters decrying an alleged attempt to "destroy" the Greek system. We needed a story about the real status of fraternities. And who is more believable than the man who revived the toga party?
But a description of fraternity life is one thing. The question remains: Would you pay $20,000 a year to have your child bond himself to others in a fraternity basement?
As usual, we welcome your comments.-Ed.
