Thanks to Tom Tomai,Libby Roberts, and the other members of the reunion committee, our tenth was, in a word, awesome. Even the weather cooperated. Festivities began on Thursday night with a concert and continued, literally around the clock, through Sunday. Highlights of the weekend included a picnic at Storrs Pond and a class dinner which featured a host of carbohydrates it wouldn't have been a Dartmouth meal had we not been confronted with a choice of noodles, lasagna, potatoes, and rice. Throughout the weekend, '79s renewed old friendships and introduced offspring to their future classmates. And by Sunday morning, we were all overwhelmed by the grim realization that, physically, we can no longer handle life in Hanover for more than a weekend.
The tenth-year classes held a joint panel discussion on ethics in the 1990s. John Bussey was one of the panel members. John, a New York resident, is a special writer for the page one staff of The Wall Street Journal. He has written for the Journal since 1983 on bureau desks in Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit.
Mark "Buddha" Caulkins has completed a one-year fellowship in orthopaedic traumatology at the Shock Trauma Department of the University of Maryland probably the top shock trauma unit in the country. In July, Caulks, his wife, Kathy, and their three children will be moving to Worcester, Mass., where he will be an assistant professor at an unspecified institution of higher learning.
A number or our class barristers have been named partners in major law firms: Dan Dokos in the New York office of Chicago-based Sidley & Austin; Ernest Schmider in the Los Angeles office of Latham & Watkins; and Walter Elliott in the Atlanta office of Alston & Bird. Ernest specializes in corporate and partnership taxation and Walter's practice involves business litigation.
Cinda Fernald's legal career is also cookin' with gas. She currently is involved in a high-profile case involving alleged sex discrimination by Washington State University. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of female student-athletes and coaches at the school. Following a trial court's finding of discrimination, the case went up to W. Rehnquist and the Supremes and Cinda is now monitoring compliance by Washington State with the injunction issued by the trial court. The result: soccer has been added as a varsity sport in 1990 with additional sports to follow in later years.
I will begin my next term as class secretary with a plea for news. Send a note, tell a friend, or call me collect. Unlike the newsletter producers, my work product is carefully scrutinized by the editors of the Alumni Magazine. I, therefore, must come up with substantial (and, regrettably, truthful) news about you all. I would also like to feature '79s in the special inserts which appear periodically. So if you know an unduly modest classmate who has failed to report a newsworthy achievement, let me know.
