Hail and farewell to Vic Smith, who was our head class agent for 11 (that's I right, 11) years. Vic has done a great job, tireless in his efforts, controlled in his frustrations and successful: $1.5 million in Alumni Fund contributions during his tenure. Having been there, I know what an arduous yet important job is the head agent's. Congrats on a job well done, Vic, and to Vesta, the good woman behind the good man in this instance. We're lucky to have Bob Pease assume the post. Give him your support, both as an agent, and as a donor.

From Lillehammer, Norway, faithful world traveler Frank Alrich writes that he and Dora were exploring the site for the 1994 Winter Olympics en route from Stockholm to Bergen. No particular reason for doing this, he says, but they had a delightful time in wonderful surroundings. Frank reports Jim Drumm married Carolyn Truax Manning in San Francisco last May, and they are living in Manila, Carolyn's home for 43 years. More exactly, 7 Farol St., Urdaneta Village, Makati Metro Manila 3117. As I recall, Jim spent his career with Ford Motors in South America, and I remember seeing him at our 40th Reunion. Frank, thanks for your report; you're a class secretary's dream!

Our blessings upon Art Pounds, who heeded our appeal for a letter. He and Jean used their frequent flyer miles to visit their son and family, whom the air force has stationed in Alaska. It was in late August-September they experienced Fairbanks' brief autumn, sunny and crisp. They spent time in Denali and Valdez (Columbia Glacier) and made it to the Arctic Circle! They're now back home enjoying the "near-perfect" climate of Orinda, Calif., and the companionship of their pet black rabbit that lends animation to their garden while consuming its weight in graham crackers weekly.

A great gentleman is gone from the scene. Last September, Nichol M. Sandoe '19, father of our classmate Nick and Bob '46, passed on at 93. He was active in Dartmouth alumni events to the end and a special friend of Joan's and mine plus others in '45. I'll miss seeing him in Boston, as I often did, on the way to Hanover, for a lively discussion of the college he loved and of world affairs. Heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Mary.

The Coles, Rickie and Don, reported an enjoyably busy summer at their beautiful setting adjacent to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Alice and Howie Sawyer stopped for an overnight, as did the Barrs before them, and the Rowans before that. Hospitable people, the Coles, and for '45s there's no limit to their warmth and good feelings.

Thought for the month: "Beware of the man on the move. He might be going downhill."

And may all your Christmases be—what- ever is your fondest wish!
