I am three issues into my new responsibilities as class secretary and I am very excited about the news that has come my way. However, I want to change roles to movie critic for a minute and recommend "A River Runs Through It." Norman Maclean, the author of the book on which the movie is based, was a Dartmouth alumnus (class of' 24). There's my justification. Great, beautiful book; great, beautiful movie.
Scott Andrews is in the movie business, and hopefully many of you saw his documentary "Last Images of War" aired on PBS in July. Scott made this film after losing a friend and colleague while they were covering the Afghan War. The film documents the life and death of four photojournalists killed during that war. He is being considered for year-end awards for his effort. In the meantime he's living his California dream on a boat in Sausalito. Although Scott has lost touch with Dartmouth in many respects, he has maintained contact with some AD brothers like Bill Gentes, Ted Lapres, and Rick Eifler.
I talked to Allison Grant Williams this month. Allison was talking about a plan for some of her freshman-year friends—AdrinaBanks, Wendy Sheppard, and others—to hold a 20-year reunion of their own to celebrate the fall when they all met and the years of friendship since. It sounds like a great group and a great plan. Allison, meanwhile, juggles the life of a working mom with son Maxwell and husband Darrell in Chicago.
Taking a different tack, Liz Cronin Urban has decided to take some time away from her law practice in Manchester, N.H., to raise her daughter Jane. Liz says she is sometimes eager for adult conversation during the . day but is thoroughly challenged by her work at home.
Kim" Carr Harmon is another stay-at-home mom who has been balancing her activities between her husband, Mark, two children, some local volunteer work, and a house renovation that, like many such projects, has taken on a life of its own.
Peggy Bcnsinger and Brian McCloskey have made life complicated without kids. Peggy commutes to Augusta, Maine, where she works in the Attorney General's office as an environmental lawyer. Brian travels to Durham, N.H., where he coaches the men's hockey team at UNH. They meet when time and schedules permit at their home in Portland. For a couple of the nineties, are dual earphones the answer?
For the record, their wedding was my first after graduation and none since has matched it for overall good times.
Several years ago I ran into Dorian Wilson at University Hospital in Newark, N.J. I called last week, and Dorian is still a liver-transplant surgeon there, one of a handful in the whole country. The facility is top-notch, and he has had a great opportunity to study and practice there. He, his wife, Barbara, and their son are contemplating future plans while shuttling between Houston, Texas, and Flemington, N.J. Dartmouth College, liver problems? Smart guy, Dorian.
Some people stay close to Dartmouth even from 3,000 miles away. Les Bowman and his wife, Jo Ann, were off to Tahoe for the weekend to help clean up the Dartmouth cabin where they spend time hiking and biking in the Sierras. During the week Les works in the Sacramento area redeveloping neglected neighborhoods. His work is challenging but Les says the public speaking is the hardest part. Maybe Senator Kennedy's spokesman PaulDonovan has some pointers for him. I'll bet he's had to do some thinking on his feet.
I hope many of you who have lost touch with your Dartmouth classmates will use these notes as the catalyst to make that overdue call or write that neglected note. I would love to help if I can.
