As I must have anticipated last October when I wrote the Winter column, it's now mid-January, and I still haven't started my Christmas cards. This is principally because of my inability to say NO to too many extra-curricular activities (all of which I enjoy). Despite my delinquency, I received many holiday greetings from classmates, for which I give many thanks.
Understandably, none was appreciated more than a pre-Christmas phone call from Lari Widmayer, who sounded great despite the Hanover weather. As I write this, Lari is moving from their home of 39 years to (nota bene!) The Greens, 53 1/2 Lyme Road, Apt. 22, Hanover. May it be a happy home for 39 more.
Welcome also was a November call from Jorge Geiger, who skipped the last mini in favor of a southeastern tour and a jaunt on the Mississippi Queen. He and Louise were about to take off for San Miguel Allende. Both are fine. The call may have been partly Alumni Fund solicitation, but, considering me a "softtouch," he didn't waste many nickels on that.
A greeting that gave me special cheer was from Hank and Gwen Odbert. Last year Hank spent considerable time in their infirmary, but this year he is well enough to undertake a trip to Maryland to visit their daughter and family. Hank asks "Do I qualify for the best old man's handwriting in the class?" He should see some of the others.
Frank Ryder reports a phone call and a meeting with Henry Kohn. They had never known each other, either at Dartmouth or even in tiny Woods Hole, though both had been connected there for many years. Henry was at the Marine Biological Laboratory, and Frank was at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. "Small world," says Frank, as they plan to meet again next summer. Why not Woodstock?
With the recent arrival of the December Thirtyteer, I'm happy to welcome MiltMclnnes's return to the job. He's been most appreciative of my several months of news lettering. I must confess that I enjoyed the luxury of writing without a deadline or 350-word limit—and plenty of material!
