Welcome Springtime! Welcome Alumni Fund! Don't forget to support and/or increase Chris Cundey's and Charlie Pinkerton's efforts to bring our class back to a level of respectable giving.
Mark your calendars for our upcoming mini-reunion in Hanover October 16-18. The Dowd's Country Inn in Lyme will be our headquarters. Make your reservations early!
Scott Palmer advised us that he put together the November '9l mini-reunion in Boston, and Herb Schoenberg, our "faithful news provider," attended the gathering. He reports that it was terrific. After the game a group got together with assorted spouses, family members, and "significant others" at the Stockyard Restaurant. Featured guests included Herb, Nick Procino, Dick Liesching,Jim Wooster, Goody Gilman, Bill Long ("the other" Bill Long), Howie Munro, and Scott. We need more input on what this group is doing for future issues.
Scott went on to advise us that his number2 son, Crawford, transferred to Dartmouth from Duke, where he played on the NCAA championship basketball team and where he was twice the Duke athlete with the best academic average. After sitting out the compulsory year, he hopes to be part of Dartmouth's '92-'93 season.
Scott further reports that his son Walter has already "beaten out his father" in media quotes, with both Newsweek and Sports Illustrated giving him some lines during his rookie season as "small forward" (at 7'2") with the NBA's Utah Jazz. Walter is the first Dartmouth grad since our own RuddyLaRusso to play in the NBA.
Finally, Scott notes that "Bill Colehower,Skeff McAllister, Bill "Moose" Morton, BillPettway, and I were among the 590 present at the Dartmouth Football reunion for players on Bob Blackmail's first five teams (1955-60) at the Shelburne Murray Hill Hotel in New York City on June 8. We even saw all the old highlights films." Thanks, Scott!
A nice note from Barlow Nelson, living in Tulsa, Okla., concerned his major love, figure skating. "Dartmouth was 'in town' in Oberstdorf, Germany, this August. The occasion was the Nebelhaum trophy in figure skating. The U.S.A. team was represented (in part) by Howard Sibley '57 and Barlow Nelson '59—Howard as the team leader and Barlow as the International Judge. This was not the first time for this pair. They served together as leaders of the 1982 U.S. World Figure Skating Team in Copenhagen. Barlow was U.S. Olympic Team Leader in 1984 at Sarajevo. Howard was Olympic Team Leader in 1988 at Calgary. Both serve the U.S. Figure Skating Association in numerous capacities."
From New York comes news that DickPress has left his old haberdashery surroundings at J.Press (a family business that was sold to Japanese owners in 1986) and has assumed the presidency of F.B. Tripler, the "crown jewel" of Hartmarx Corporation's speciality store division. Dick is quoted as saying "I want to lighten up the store, air it out a bit, and make it more hospitable to the young men who might look up to the CEOs and senior executives who shop here." (Sounds like it was appealing to our generation—well, let's give Dick some "power shopping." See you next month. Keep the cards and letters flowing.
