"Robert Williams Mac Millen was a tender, gentle man, a man who loved his family. He also was a 'get the facts, man' kind of guy. Who, where, when, and why were his watch words.
"He never understood how rumpled my facts were or why this didn't bother me. I always said, 'but I didn't take physics,' when he explained 'for every push there's a pull.' However, I did love the yang and ying in art.
"A gentleman: it's too bad men don't wear stetsons or fedoras anymore. He was a wonderful tipper of hats to the ladies. He always took his hat off in elevators, and he didn't understand leaving a cap on while eating dinner out.
"This head got him into the troubles he had (melanoma) sunshine may be a high for John Denver, but it attacked Bob with a vengeance.
"At the hospital where he persisted through an operation on tumors, radiation, another operation, and procedures, the nurses and doctors loved his smile and his manners. He always covered his mouth when he coughed, even reaching to do so when nearly unconscious. His smile came through to each of those who entered his room, even when his talking ceased.
"He was a great golfer, but I pressed him into gardening and home repairs, and then his sore knees 'finished the round' for him.
"Summers in Lake Muskoka in Canada, family vacations in Virginia, Cape Cod, and Williamsburg were happy times for all of us. He was a great trip director. Later his expertise served him well on Dartmouth Alumni Trips Abroad.
"Four wonderful winters found us on that island in Georgia where the salt marsh turns golden and the sand curves around the sea.
"Bob loved the woods and fields of our home in Lyme, but he also loved the ocean and the house on the island off the coast of Maine. It will be a haven for his children and grandchildren.
"Bob and I were members of a private mutual-admiration society to the end." Crosbie
The above was included in the church bulletin for Bob's memorial service July 9 at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College.
