In an effort to learn how their classmates feel about their College and the class itself, last year 1953's executive committee sent out a survey to every class member. Half responded with answers that ranged from expected to startling. Here are some conclusions that the class officers reached from the exercise:
Classmates' "biggest concerns" were the College administration and its handling of The Dartmouth Review.
On the other hand, more than a third cited "no opinion" on College issues.
Inactive members of the class seemed to like the class itself; one in three of this group cited the College administration as the reason for their inactivity.
Surprisingly, active alumni were more negative toward the state of affairs at Dartmouth than were the inactive group.
The '53 executives cited "major frustration" among classmates who lack a way to criticize decisions taken at Dartmouth. The class officers say they are "forced into the role of being apologists for the Trustees or administration." Regular surveys "can help blunt these frustrations," say the '53ers.
