Sometimes I miss the glitz and glamour of the big city, but I didn't on January 8, the day the Elvis stamps came out for sale in Macon. The Macon post office always carries the aura of happy, busy post-office people who are glad to see you and help you. On Elvis day the guys working behind the counter had their hair slicked back, their shirt sleeves rolled up, ties loosened, and they played rock-n-roll music all afternoon. My academic-type buddies and I, who had wandered in there, were temporarily stunned. Then, one of the postmen whipped out his electric guitar and played "Blue Suede Shoes," and we got this great idea. Why not start our own rock-n-roll band? So, there you have it—the start of my newest and most colorful endeavor. I will keep you posted.
Congratulations to Thomas W.Eggleston, who has been named chief operation officer and executive vice president for worldwide direct sales for Amway Corporation. Before joining Amway in May of 1991, Tom was general manager of Worldwide Automotive Finishing with Illinois Tool Works, and vice president, general counsel, and secretary for Ransburg Corporation. Prior to those positions he served as vice president, general counsel, and executive producer for the Organizing Committee for the 10th Pan-American Games held in Indianapolis. Tom has also been an adjunct professor at the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University and a partner at a Lafayette, Indiana-based law firm.
Amway operates in nearly 60 countries, has a line of 400 Amway products, and markets another 5,000 brand-name products through its personal shopper's catalog.
Another congratulations to EdwardBeasley. Life Wise Marketplace, Mount Vernon, has announced the acceptance of Edward as an elder-law attorney to be a member of its consortium of providers. The firm is a planning, research, and referral service for senior citizens.
Jeffrey Baxter, one of my fellow Atlantans who lives in the suburb Sandy Springs, has become affiliated with the law firm of Glass, McCullough, Scherrill and Harrold, which specializes primarily in the area of healthcare law. After Dartmouth Jeff graduated from Boston University School of Law and spent 14 years as a Georgia assistant attorney general. He also established his own law firm in 1991, which he still maintains.
Congratulations to Paul Dixon who is now the proud father of Josiah Paul Dixon. Paul's wife, April, remains a stay-at-home mom while Paul continues to teach fourth grade.
Jerry Dollar reports that he was married to Susan Poission last June, and this year Susan gave birth to a baby girl, Emily Frances. They also have a six-year-old son, Thomas. Jerry is an associate professor of English at Sienna College, where he has been teaching for 12 years. Jerry has accomplished climbing the 46 high peaks of the Adirondacks.
And last but not least, Bill Cater has taken a sabbatical from AT&T, has taught some in the East Orange school systems in New Jersey, and has devoted himself to acting and voice lessons and occasional musical kicks. He contributes his talents to the Randolph Kiwanis Club, where he is currently president—maybe Bill would like to try out with our rock-n-roll band. Bill and his wife, Eileen, have a daughter, Kerry, who is a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology studying social work.
We hope to get some news from JackMartin, who has been sightseeing in Iraq.
