Vance Clark writes, "When we of '21 who are left begin to think about the wonderful accomplishments of our classmates, we naturally gravitate to our own Orton Havergal Hicks, who started out as class president in both freshman and sophomore years. In his first year he also got a taste of preparation for World War I, as a member of what we called 'The Boy Scouts,' those too young for induction into the army. Nevertheless, the Boy Scouts learned how to dig six-foot trenches, and Ort led them in that endeavor as senior captain of the Dartmouth Regiment.

"After graduation, he spent some time teaching young professionals how to produce good movies. But Dartmouth beckoned. Becoming vice president of the College in charge of fundraising, he showed future generations how to do it. Today he still lives in Hanover, and his thoughts are sought by those who now have active responsibilities at the College.

"In wonderful accomplishments I vote for Ort to top the list!"

Class President Don Sawyer adds the following list of successful '21 ers:

Ellis O. Briggs, who over a long and successful career in the State Department represented the United States as ambassador to several countries, including Brazil, Peru, and Czechoslovakia.

Werner Janssen, who started composing music at Dartmouth and had a brilliant career as a symphony orchestra conductor, was acknowledged worldwide as the best interpreter of the Sibelius symphonies.

John L. Sullivan, a successful attorney in Manchester, N.H., and Washington, D.C., served as a Trustee of Dartmouth and was secretary of the navy under Truman.
