APRIL 1994 Harry A. Shawlll,

REMINDER: 35th Reunion, June 12-15, 1995. Don't forget to mark your calendar now! Let's really have a big turnout for this premier event. I had hoped to have a major testimonial to our special "gifts to the world." However, my numerous attempts to drum up input met with none. Thus I declare all of us to be a special gift. Now to the regular news, including a number of the green response cards keep sending them, please.

Read Heydt advises that he just celebrated ten years as rector of Christ Church in Hudson, Ohio, and IS years in the Episcopal priesthood. "Hudson," he tells us, "is a booming village southeast of Cleveland and will even see a new Episcopal Church completed in the fall of '94." He has two sons, Charlie 16 and Michael 13, "who are delightful and keep me honest."

Bill Truex broke both bones in his lower leg paragliding in Crested Butte, Colo., with his son Scott last September. He says he hopes to be off the crutches soon. His condition reminds him of Mai Swenson, who was on crutches with similar problems for most of our senior year. Bill lives with his wife, Judy, in Grand Isle, Vt.

Heard from Sam Werner and wife Laura (Smith '61). Their daughter Catherine (25) was married last October. Sam was recently elected president of the Neutron Scattering Society of America (I'm impressed!), and, as noted in the announcement, Sam's greatest loves are "the spin-density wave in Chromium, quantum mechanics, and tennis." Hey, I understand the last. To the latter he devotes great tenacity and a willingness to play everyday at 7:00 a.m. come hail or shine.

Of greater import, Sam was awarded the Curator's Professorship, the highest honor the University of Missouri can bestow on a faculty member. Early on Sam distinguished himself at the Ford Motor Research Labs in Detroit in solid-state physics before joining the university. Laura is the librarian at Oakland Jr. High School in Columbia and active in the Missouri School Library Association. Bill Brigance writes that three years ago he was struck down by an attack which resulted in a severe heart problem. After a long period at the Veterans Hospital he is now in a nursing home, The Altoona Manor, Altoona, lowa. Though he takes more than 100 prescription pills per week he is still in there fighting. Keep it up, Bill. Nice hearing from you

Bob Werbel notes that he purchased the latest Nina Simone recording, and upon reading the liner notes he was pleased to see the pianist was none other than our own Mike Melvoin. Thanks for the input. Hey Mike, how about an update from you?

We hear from Dave Marr out in Aussie land that he notices "Vietnam having almost become the flavor of the month again (hopefully not the poisoned chalice!)." He is "much busier with administration and finding less time for research. Makes one recall wistfully the 1980s when it was just archival dossiers, note-taking and chapters to write." He tells us, "I'm off to Saigon next, where a recent Alumni Magazine reports two graduates are trying to establish a local branch."

Keep those letter and cards coming.
