We had hoped to garner fresh material from the mini-reunion, Colgate game weekend, but our doctor crabbed up half the act. Katie came down with a repeat of pneumonia, not the hospital kind but the "stay in bed" type. On top of that a long planned week's visit from Navy son, wife, and GRANDSON was scheduled Sunday, so your sec joined the group Friday night, for the meeting, and for half a football game before heading home to help get ready. It is difficult to make plans with military folks, so you grab what you can get. Katie survived, but it's a slow mending process.
Sam Dillon was stateside for a month-long promotion attack on travel agencies in the higher-income New England areas for his and Dottie's new hotel venture in St. Croix, the Pink Fancy. Armed with expert advice, a rental car, and an array of pink folders, he was winding up visiting about 450 agencies. Said he had good receptions. They have a small operation of 13 accommodations a main building with two smaller ones. They have poured in their money and love and now await the big season. Sam had planned ahead to be with us for reunion.
Friday night dinner was held at the Hanover Inn s Wheelock Room, recently renovated to accommodate larger groups. Sherry and Al Bryant gave a lovely cocktail party there for all to celebrate their 44th wedding anniversary. Whitey Burnham gave a nice talk on the history of Dartmouth athletics. The evening ended with the showing of that wonderful Lem Bowen "1937 Slide Show." We recommend that other classes consult with Lem in Hanover on making one for themselves. It's like a nostalgic travelogue back in time.
The well-attended class meeting showed us still solvent, and those who like to mark up calendars can chalk up October 7 and 8 for next year's fall reunion, the William and Mary game. On the recommendation of Frank Irwin, the class voted to adopt Vern Farnsworth, and similarly on Charley Blaisdell's to adopt John Johannessen. Both gentlemen are indirectly involved with the College, great people, and appreciative of such a class connection. More about them later.
Thanks to Russ Stearns, the tail-gating area across from the gym was excellent, even to trekking a block to Pat King's apartment for needed facilities. Since we left during the game we missed out on the Bosworth/Erdman joint brunch Sunday at Eastman. Katie sends love and thanks to all who signed the get-well card as well as other cards and phone calls.
As reported earlier, Russ Stearns was named president-elect of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In this post he will do extensive world traveling and has already been to Poland, Egypt, and China. It will be hard to keep up with him and Lee from now on.
Last summer we visited with Barbi and Dana Douglass in Bethel, Maine. Doug had undergone surgery for a polyp on his vocal chord which left him somewhat hoarse but mending and, thank goodness, off the cigarettes. For years Barbi has worked in human services for the state of Maine, lately advising hospitals, nursing homes, etc. on Medicare procedures. The state decided to consolidate offices in Portland, making it difficult to commute, so, being on the edge of retirement anyway, she quit. Doug has cut back on the strenuous aspects (backpacking up and down mountains) in his surveying business, too. On one of their visits in Europe they became intrigued with "bed and breakfast" accommodations, so with their large 20-room home they have started taking in travelers. It is all new for them but they have met some very nice families and look encouragingly toward the skiing season. It's a natural spot, next to Sunday River Ski area, right on Route 2, a main road to Canada.
Fred Vogt quotes Roily Kent (on the back of his dues notice): "Our Mexican financial debacle has left us not broke but badly bent in terms of dollars for travel and donations. Best saludos to all."
Bob Bryan represented Dartmouth at the inauguration of Douglas Cater as 23rd president of Washington College in Chestertown, Mdin October. Marylou and Bill Falion sent word that son Peter was married in Alabama last August. We also understand that Rog Holler's widow died in Florida; Rog died in 1980.
A reprise of last June's reunions: '37ers registering at the class tent include, left to right, standing.Martha Bosworth, Sally Gould, Hal Gould, Phil Conti, and George Skinner, and seated, BillHeroy and Al Mayer.
