The Dartmouth Alumni Magazine has devoted this issue to the outstanding contributions of Dartmouth graduates, and a representative group of classmates at a recent mini-reunion concurred in devoting this column to the unsung heroes of 1962.
So with some trepidation, we shall not repeat the praises for our very talented classmates whose accomplishments in the fields of business, medicine, law, education, music and the arts, theology, government, and the military are well documented and acknowledged by society as a whole. For a late-blooming class (less than 600 of us graduated in 1962, with more than 100 classmates graduating in later years), collectively, we have garnered some impressive professional and career credentials. The successes of our classmates have been keenly tabulated by the College Development Office (and by our successful head agents!). Certainly the profile published in 1962's 25 th Reunion Yearbook (based on responses from 319 classmates) projects a well-educated and financially well-rewarded group. Those 87 percent doing graduate studies receiving M.A. (10 percent), M.B.A. (24 percent), M.D. (17 percent), J.D. or LL.B. (19 percent), Ph.D. (12 percent), and other (10 percent) graduate degrees.
This 25 th Yearbook profile estimated the average or composite 1962 graduate to be married with 2.3 children, to have a strong work ethic and a deep commitment to family, community, and to the Dartmouth community, and to have strong personal or religious convictions. Perhaps the more in-depth and meaningful snapshot of 1962 was the compilation of interviews of some 104 classmates in Men Our Age: Reflections of a Generation.
The consistent theme expressed by our class officers in their recollections for the Yearbook's "25th Post-Graduate History of the Class of 1962" is the collective effort of so many classmates over the years in contributing time and money to Dartmouth to assure that future generations will have the wonderful education and campus experiences we shared.
And so now to give praise and thanks to the unsung heroes of the class of 1962:
• To those who have toiled obscurely in the vineyards for just causes; for universal health care, education, and basic human rights; for preserving and protecting the environment; and for peace.
• To the women standing behind the great achievers of 1962, and to the many wives and lovers who stand ahead of so many of us; and to our children and their families for their love and support.
• To those who suffer in silence from the pains of disease, loneliness, or despair, and to those who reach out to classmates and families in their times of special need.
• To those who have given so generously of their resources and utilized their many talents in serving as class officers, fundraisers, alumni representatives, interviewers, sports supporters, and keepers of the Dartmouth spirit throughout this world.
We remember you, we encourage you to persevere, we thank you, and we wish you and yours Godspeed.
