Estonian Fish Discovery While on an expedition to Estonia in 1932 Professor William Patten discovered a new fish. He named it Dartmutbia Patten.
The Hydra soil moisture probe, developed by Dartmouth physicist John Walsh and department colleagues Robert Layman and Richard Cook, is the only one of its kind that measures moisture content, temperature, and salinity all at once, allowing farmers to use water and fertilizers more efficiently. With the help of Dartmouth's Technology Transfer Office, which works to bring campus research innovations to market, Hydra has been licensed to Vitel, Inc., of Chantilly, Virginia.
Farmers' friend.
Patten's eponymous fish.
