O.K., I admit it. I got lazy. I got a couple of clippings, I made a few half-hearted calls, and gave up. What follows is a smorgasbord of news from around the class.
Marilyn Jaschke has been named executive director of the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. She oversees literacy grant programs and training projects providing assistance around the state. And she gets to live in Santa Fe.
I tried to track down another educator in our class hanging out in New Mexico but Brenda Montgomery Tullis wasn't at her home in Albuquerque when I called. She lives there with her husband and teaches at a local elementary school.
Bill Monsour writes via e-mail, "I'm still hanging out in Bangkok after four years. Doing management consulting but mainly pursuing my love of theater. I'm leading an acting workshop and I'll be directing a musical in September." He's reachable at .
Last month I tried reaching JackieAckerman in Los Angeles. I didn't get her but I had a hysterical conversation with another Jackie Ackerman who often gets mistaken calls. It seems our Jackie is very secretive about her legal work and hard to track down. Anybody in contact with her?
Jose Fernandez received some nice press in Crain's New York recently with a glowing account of his move to start O'Melveny & Myers' Latin-America practice. Jose brings his Cuban background and 11 years of related experience from
Baker & McKenzie to the task. With quotes like "our clients clamor to work with Jose" and "he is regarded as a brilliant lawyer," expectations are high for Jose.
Check this out from the Washington Post. Freshman Rep. Helen Chenoweth (R-Idaho) thought she was a lock for reelection. "It certainly looked like Nampa anesthesiologist Bill Levinger, a newcomer who filed for office at literally the last minute 4:59 p.m. April 5 would be no problem. After all, during the taping of a television interview in late April he stripped down to his underwear and offered a reporter $5,000 for a kiss." Although he didn't pull off the upset, his unorthodox approach picked up 32 percent of the vote. Nice try Bill.
Just to see if all anesthesiologists act this way I called Noel Carlson in Holland, Mich. Unfortunately there was no answer.
A few columns ago I mentioned Michelle Ratte's fashion design work on Martha's Vineyard. An article in the local paper said she was quitting after six years. They didn't know what she planned next but did say whatever she does "it will be with great style, a sense of beauty, and the utmost in exquisite taste." There's certainly plenty of demand for that.
Speaking of style and beauty, CarolAkerson is cutting her own CD. Although details were sketchy about the recording, Carol has been jazz singing as well as teaching and writing music for awhile and this would be a big breakthrough for her. She performs in Boston clubs if you're in the area. Check for local listings.
John Tarantino was recently elected president-elect of the Rhode Island Bar Association. He's active in community projects outside his litigation law practice. He and his wife, Pat, have three children.
Having recently completed a small renovation on our kitchen, I read with interest an article about Ned Nunes and his wife who turned a rundown seven-unit house into a family home in Manhattan. You're a better man than me for taking that project on. I hope it came out well.
