Bob Douglas is trying to get his old roommate and buddy, Dr. Dave Miller, to visit Houston. Bob attended Dave's marriage to Ellen in 1950, then some 30 years later he and Ginny visited the couple in Portland, Ore., where Dave is a surgeon whose great other interest is fishing. He caught them a sturgeon in the Columbia River, and now Bob wants Dave to join him to try deep Gulf-of-Mexico fishing in Bob's son's cruiser out of Freeport. Bob says marlins and tarpon are possible return compliments, which might compare favorably for Dave with his northwest salmon.
Dick Bredenburg advises from St. Pete that he and Bob Herrick were the two '48s furthest traveled at the mini last September and had great times. Both sang in a resurrected Glee Club with '45s and '47s, Bob worked with the Hukes and others in setting plans for the '48 yearbook for our 50th in 1998, and Dick and Huldah then drove to Vermont's Northeast Kingdom for the autumn colors and to visit a Buddhist retreat. (They probably did not know that veterinarian Stan Churchill was nearby in Orleans.) One result of the trip was that Mort Smith and Nancy of Melvin Village, N.H., stopped at the Bredenburgs' on their way to Marco Island. Dick said Mort had some on-campus photos from 1945 which "brought back some great memories."
Hank Mueller and Hank Durham '46 provided final confirmation that Dartmouth, with only one loss, did win the EIL Baseball Championship over Yale with two losses back in spring 1948. (Dave Barr played in left, our Hank in right, and the other Hank on first.) The somewhat informal league executive chose Yale to go to the nationals at Omaha, however, partly because Yale had a pitcher of recognized big-league caliber who had beaten Dartmouth (Quinn) and partly because they knew the Yale first baseman would one day be President (Bush).
Al Cassin sent along a video a few years ago of the horrible damage done in south Florida by Hurricane Andrew, a wind that just missed the Cassins at the north of their then-home in the Florida Keys. Perhaps it was too close, as the Cassins have since moved to Zolfo Springs east of Sarasota, not far south of John Cameron in Clermont, the navy man appointed to the V-12 who waited five hours in WRJ for a train to Norwich when he first arrived in Hanover back in 1943. Al's stationery shows he's a member of the U.S. Shooting Team, for which congratulations are in order.
Good to talk to Carl "Red" Evans. He and Norm Laird and the late EdGingrich were on the 1944 football team together and were all in Atlanta together in the 19505, when they were active in the Dartmouth Club of Georgia. Carl went with International Paper right out of Tuck-Thayer in 1949 and enjoyed a full career of 36 years plus one day with them in sales and research until his retirement in 1985. He occasionally ran into LloydKrumm, also in the paper industry. Carl and Janice now live at Warwick in the Hudson Valley south of West Point. Don't forget that Marv Axelrod still does his job for us in the Alumni Fund. Will you give him some help?
