APRIL 1996 Rick Willets,

Greetings from the land of snow! This month, I'll give you the news alphabetically, by height. Ted Baehr spent some time this fall in Europe accompanied by his 89-year-old father, Ted the Elder '28. The highlight of the trip was when Ted (the younger) spoke at a meeting of the House of Lords in Parliment. His topic was how the media affects children and culture. The BBC consequently adopted new decency standards. Ted cautions us not to confuse chronology with causality but feels his talk did help move things along. Ted also spoke before the German Film Community.

John Kitzhaber, governor of Oregon, received high marks from a group of highschool kids when he visited their school last fall. Mixed in with the serious questions was the ever popular "boxers or briefs?" query. John sidestepped the issue but in the interest of the public's right to know, I'm asking his college roommate (whoever you are) to come forth with the inside story.

Describing his urology practice as the "human plumbing business," ArtLaMontagne continues to ply his trade in an effort to pay all the tuition bills that pile up on his desk. He recently completed a five-year stint as chief of urology and two years as chairman of the department of surgery at an un-named hospital. Having turned the reins of power over to "some young turks that have the energy and enthusiasm that I must have had a few years ago," Art plans to use his extra time to improve his golf game and get to know his wife again (that was the order he put them in not me).

Lee Mitau has joined First Bank System Inc. as executive vice president and general counsel. Most recently, Lee has been a senior partner with Dorsey and Whitney in Minneapolis. John Spooner wrote to explain why he hadn't sent me any of his Frito-Lay products to sample. He no longer works for them. John is now senior v.p. of Ecolab Inc. and has moved to Minnesota, where he has restored a 1920s house on Lake Minnetonka. His new address is 1385 Orono Lane, Wayzata, MN 55391. I don't know what Ecolab does but I'm pretty sure I don't want any of its products shipped to my house.

Wayzata, by the way, is where JonSwenson hails from. I mention Swede's name every year or so just to see if he'll write. A symposium, "Stewards of the Land: Indian Tribes, the Environment, and the Law," was jointly sponsored by Dartmouth and the University of Vermont Law School this fall. One of the speakers was Bill Yellowtail, who is a regional administrator in the Denver office of the EPA. Bill told the audience that "we need to be offensive rather than defensive" in working to protect tribal lands from environmental degradation. We need a strategy that's aggressive and visionary."

Lastly, I received a note from Mrs. C. Everett Koop. She wrote to tell our class that the class of 1959 had planted a pine tree near Occom Pond and dedicated it in David Koop's memory. The '59s have adopted Dr. Koop as an honorary member for helping them with their community-based class project. This was their way of saying thanks. When you're in Hanover, you can find the tree where the road begins to curve around toward the Outing Club House. There is a brass plaque fastened to a rock at the base of the tree.

That's all I have, but next month I'm going to let you know of all our classmates who are in some way active in alumni affairs. I just received the alumni booklet from the college. Hold your collective breath!
