So, this is the special Alumnae Issue? What does that mean to a dinosauric, pre-coed class like ours? Well, the class of 1949 has actually made no small contribution to the rolls of Dartmouth alumnae. You could look it up. No fewer than 25 women of Dartmouth can call a '49er "Dad." In two cases a '49er dad can call two daughters fellow alums, namely Paul Woodberry (Laura 'BO and Sarah '87) and your secretary (Sally 'BO and Susan '81). Three more of the '49 female legacies were also 'Bos (the most popular class): Vail Haak's Amy, Richard Kearsley's Ann, and Ir1 Marshall's Susan—who unfortunately has died since graduation.
The earliest coed class at the College to boast a daughter of 1949 was 1976. This was Julie Schuetz Lowe, whose father was the late Charles Schuetz.
Remarkably, a generation later, there is a '49 legacy still on campus! Dorothy Bright '97, daughter of Tom Bright, decided to get her college degree when she was 30-something and will graduate this June.
Here are the rest of our female legacies. Nels Abrahamsen's Laura '85, PaulBjorklund's Kristin '77, John Daukas's Joan '88, Mary Durning's Susan '82, Rod Finkbiner's Isabel '77, GeorgeHartmann's Elizabeth '91, JordanKurland's Sheila '79, Ed Leede's Kathleen '85, Mike McGean's Loren '92, Bob Priester's Ann '78, class adoptee John Rassias's Veronika '87, DaveRaynolds's Martha '78, Bob Smith's Susan '83, John Stearns's Winifred '82, Gordon Thomas's Krista '86, and AlWagner's Elizabeth '83. (Note that a number of those mentioned now have married names, but, unfortunately, I don't have all the facts, ma'am.)
If it were up to me I'd say that the class of 1949 should adopt all the young alumnae I've mentioned, even though they have perfectly good classes of their own. Do I hear a second?
Incidentally, some of these young alumnae with '49 connections also had brothers who attended Dartmouth: Daukas, Kearsley, Kurland, Leede, Raynolds, and Woodberry.
I'm not aware of any female (or male) grandchildren of '49ers who have applied to the College as yet. Keep me posted.
Needless to say, there were quite a few mothers involved one per household, actually in turning out young women capable of following in their father's Green footsteps. Space doesn't allow all their names. But there are more than a few '49 wives who, over the years, have contributed to the class's success far beyond the call of duty. People such as Doris Thomas, Manya Unger, Cathy Irwin, Lois McGean, Ann Gramstorff, and Barbara Rosenfeld ought to be considered '49 alumnae. I'm sure you can think of others for whom we should give a rouse and I'd appreciate your nominees.
You probably noticed that on the cover of the previous issue of DAM there was a photograph of Michael Corleone '49. Frankly, I don't remember Mike on campus you know, it was the end of the war years and you couldn't know everyone. I would love to hear from Mike, or anyone who remembers him. I believe he was in Casket & Gauntlet.
