Father-daughter relationships seem to have become even more special now that so many of our daughters are going into professional life, and the impact is especially profound as regards the class of 1960 when daughters follow their fathers to Dartmouth.
A proud Paul Cantor sent out an announcement not long ago that his daughter Carolyn '93 was producer of a commemorative performance at Carnegie Hall, the I,oooth performance reunion of Lee Breuer and Bob Telson's The Gospel atColonus. Tickets ranged from $25 to $250.
Bruce Eaken's daughter Amanda is a sophomore, class of '99, and the third generation of Bruce's family to go to Dartmouth. Her grandfather and his father, Bruce Sr., was in the class of '26. Raised in Manhattan, Amanda is captain of the women's Ultimate Frisbee team in Hanover and loves the school as much as her dad. "Whatever that Hanover magic is, it works just the same" across the generations... and sexes, Bruce says.
Spence Morgan's daughter Jill '85 was a Russian studies major and spent a term in Leningrad. Married a year out of Dartmouth, she is now associate director of reunion giving at Stanford University after first doing fundraising for Stanford Business School.
Howard Frankel had not one, but two Dartmouth daughters, Alison '85 and Valerie '87. Alison has done extensive articles covering such subjects as domestic violence and breast cancer for American Lawyer magazine, and Valerie, the author of several racy mystery novels, has a column in Mademoiselle. "I have written extensively about my family in my relationships column for Mademoiselle," Valerie told me, "and have written about them in my books. They don't always love it, but they've grown used to it."
One of the most distinctively named daughters of classmates is 9 Wendy '86, whose father, Bob Sanders, also named one of his sons Stefan 7. In neither case were the numerals spelled out. 9 was an outstanding hockey player while in Hanover, which was not surprising for an Alaskan. She is now a physician in Anchorage.
Tony Roisman's daughter Rachel '96 is working for the Berkeley-Oakland Social Services group on a Lombard fellowship in the Bay area, and Urban Hirschey's daughter Ann '85 is helping administer health clinics in the East African nation of Eritrea.
John Goyette's daughter Tracey '90 has taken up where her father took off, in the legal profession. Her dad enthusiastically reports that in her third year she is first in a class of 182 at the University of Maryland Law School and has been selected for a fourth district U.S. Court of Appeals clerkship.
Alex von Summer, Axel Grabowsky,Tom Grow, Richard Pomboy, and RickRoesch are among many other classmates who have had daughters go to Dartmouth.
It beats Hap Dunning and myself, whose daughters went to Yale. But I had the pleasure of discussing in full with my daughter Kathy Dartmouth's 40-6 victory over Yale at our mini-reunion last fall. You can imagine how the emphasis helped our relationship!
