Bruce Bernstein wrote in April about the Northern Ireland situation. "I will be part of a group of psychologists, Some from Northern Ireland, some born here, Protestants and Catholics (and obviously a handful of jews), invited to Belfast in August to teach group therapy to local therapists there.. .It won't be all work; my wife and I will also visit the Aran Islands and bike Connemara."
Will Lange had plans in May for a late July Arctic trip that incorporated "world class fishing for both trout and char, a tundra trek over fascinating country, two archeological sites of different ages, a schooner ride...."
Frank Hoefle is president of the New York Ophthalmological Society.
Clif Olds wrote about Jim Freedman's retirement: "As an increasingly conservative academic who deplores some of the excesses of political correctness, I understand some of the concerns voiced by members of the class during the Freedman administration. But I visit Hanover fairly frequently and am pretty familiar with the current state of the College, and I'm convinced that it's a better, stronger, and fairer Dartmouth because of Freedman's stewardship. It's nice to know that others feel the same way." Clif is Edith Cleaves Barry Professor in the art department at Bowdoin College. The "others who feel the same way" are some of our classmates posting to our e-mail list.
Bill Muldoon touches a lot of e-mail list bases in his July message: "I'm afraid I fall into that category of e-mail recipients who rarely post anything themselves. However, I would hate to think that I might be excluded (perish) if I didn't publish. I never get any spam on my e-mail, from whatever source, although I do get more and more unwanted make-money schemes. I think my brokers sold my e-mail address to others. As for the jokes, I enjoy only about 20 percent, but my wife likes most of them, so all is not lost. More Great Issues [style discussions] would be fine, but still I would [probably] read but not reply. Now if anyone is into classic automobile restoration or hunting (How would you know I'm retired?), get back to me privately." Bill is at 900 Meng Drive, Fort Morgan, CO 80701.
Adam Block, who has promoted our class's e-mail list participation so resolutely that we have more members than any other class, including the recent graduates whose techno-savvy is so widely boasted whew—Adam wrote in early summer about the small villa he and Margaret rented in Sala Comacina, Italy, right on Lake Como. They were enjoying the ambiance, food, and wine, and were immersing themselves in the local silk-printing industry, Margaret's specialty.
Several myths and rumors about Alumni Fund participation were corrected at the Alumni Council meeting in May. For instance, although younger classes have always had lower participation rates than older classes, the difference these days is less than it used to be.
Women are at least as likely to give as men; women's participation in the fund has been greater than men's in 17 of the 21 coed classes.
Participation did fall off when cash-in only accounting began, down from 56.2 percent in 1993 to 48.6 percent in 1994. But it climbed back to 50.2 percent in 1996-97 and was looking good for 1997- 98.
