Just in case you've spent the winter on a desert island or somewhere in space—real or cyber—or just plain haven't opened your mail, I want to remind you that our 50th is only a few months away. Make plans NOW! Come on back to Hanover; you'll like it.
Why Class Notes editors tear their hair: Whit Williams made his first visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown a while ago. In talking with people there, he found an interest in his senior-year thesis, "The Sociological Implications of Jackie Robinson's Breaking into Major League Baseball." Now, his interview notes with Robinson and baseball Commissioner Ford Frick, correspondence from Robinson and the thesis will be part of the Robinson collection in the Hall of Fame Library. Given that Whit and I roomed together for two years after going through high school together, wouldn't you think he'd have given me that story? No way! Instead, he Green Cards it to Fifty Joe (and I have to plagiarize it).
In case you M.D.s among us need another good reason to come back for our 50th, PaulLena reports that there will be a special picnic get-together of the Med School class of '51 on the Thursday before the reunion.
My contact in the CIA reports that three Bobs, Mauk, Waterman, Mcllwain and Jack Harned and their spouses were spotted in China this past summer. They claimed to be there with an alumni tour group.
Tom O'Connell sent me a most interesting reprint of an article he and brother Jeff '5l co-authored for the University of Virginia's Journal of Law and Politics. It was a review of the book written by the daughter of Kenny O'Donnell, the associate and very close friend of both Jack and Bobby Kennedy. The O'Connells and O'Donnell went through high school together (the Worcester, Mass., branch of the Irish mafia?).
An article on the Riverton (N.J.) Improvement Association, forwarded by Bob Thomson, tells of the many fine projects undertaken by Bob and Marjorie designed to beautify their little town.
For the information of you computer geeks, we're in the process of setting up a web page on the internet for the class of 'SO. Any ideas or subject contributions will be gratefully appreciated.
That's it. And remember: June 9-11 in Hanover.
