Bob Caulfield hasn't been back to Hanover since graduation, but he made plans to go to our 40th Reunion, June 12-15, after a conversation with his Dartmouth roommate and fellow-Californian, Haley Fromholz.

As Bob recalls it, Haley, "in his distinctive style, said, 'Bob, you ought to come to one of these things. You don't have that many left.' " So, as he acknowledges, "The basic impetus was Haley's judicial wit."

It took Haley, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge, a little time to 'fess up he actually said this, but he finally allowed, "I would certainly say that to Bob."

"It's going to be a wonderful few days," said Bob, who is also looking forward to see- ing another roommate, Rick Roesch, as well as Alike Notaro and Charlie Radigan.

It's the prospect of seeing former room- mates and close friends drat often seems to inspire a commitment to attending the Reunion. That was certainly the case in MelKau's decision to come all the way from his home in Honolulu to Hanover for the first time since 1976.

Mel will meet his roommate Bill Colton in Boston before the Reunion, and both are looking forward to it so much. Mel also says he wants to show Dartmouth to his wife, Sim, with a point of view of convincing her it would be an excellent college one day for their 10-year-old daughter. Bill and his wife, Terry, are busy, meanwhile, these days as guardians of their grandchildren, Nicole, 9, and Matthew, 7. He remarks, "Dartmouth never leaves you. You may get upset at it, but what I've come to believe is that the education I got served me in much better stead than I thought it would on graduation weekend, so long ago. It allowed me to really have a good life. It's given us the freedom to be what we want to be."

Among others coming back to Hanover after a comparatively long time are MarcAusten (Abrahams during our Hanover days), who has retired now as a school- teacher and gone back to his first love, acting, in New York; Bruce Henry, who is especially looking forward to the academic departmental receptions since he teaches college math himself in Worcester, Mass; and Mark Hinshaw, who went to our San Francisco collective 60th birthday party and enjoyed seeing many old friends then. He says, "San Francisco was one of the things that helped persuade us to go to the 40th."

Several times Mark has met classmate Richard Strehle, a resident of Frankfurt, Germany, who has also made plans to come to the Reunion. He and Richard have met in Frankfurt, Paris and even Australia, plus once in Hanover in the 1970s.

Indeed, according to Jim Adler, 28 class members are coming to the Reunion who did not attend either the 30th or 35th. This is great news for our fellowship.
