While their classmates have been teaching, consulting or studying, Nancy Blodmfieia '99 and Danra Kazenski '99 have been hammering, sawing and—roof by roof—building a non-profit organization. Founded in 1998, the Corps of Volunteers Effecting Repair (COVER) uses an army of volunteers to build wheelchair ramps, weatherproof homes, install cabinets and simply do what it takes to improve the living conditions of some of the Upper Valley's neediest families. But it's more than putting on a roof: "Priority is on creating a genuine relationship with members of the community," says Kazenski. "Some of my best friends in the Upper Valley now are over 70." After two years as COVER'S volunteer coordinator, Kazenski recently left to work on other area community projects, and Rhona Daliison '99 replaced her. Bloomfield, responsible for fundraising and salvaging materials, is working on the group's latest goal: sustainability, She helped raise $30,000 for storage space and a shop to sell inexpensive, recycled building materials and household appliances to the public.
